Report: Iowa AD uncertain on Black Friday game

The future of Nebraska’s traditional Black Friday football game could be in doubt.

Iowa Athletic Director Gary Barta told KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids that the future of the Heroes Game on Friday is still up for consideration. The first two Iowa-Nebraska games were scheduled for the Friday after Thanksgiving, but the future dates have yet to be set.

The Friday time slot offered both schools national exposure when few other games were on television, but that may not be enough to keep Iowa interested.

“That’s one of the benefits,” Barta said of the exposure. “One of the challenges, and I’ve talked to a lot of our fans that say a Friday is more challenging. They’re trying to be with family on Thanksgiving and then they try to get to Iowa City. Again, I can make a case where it works well, and I can make a case where we should go back to Saturday. As of yet, we haven’t done anything to finalize it.”

Nebraska has played on the Friday after Thanksgiving every year since 1990. If that’s to continue, it will require Iowa’s consent.

Is Iowa trying to avoid a rivalry? The Friday game is as much of a tradition for NU as Oklahoma [was]. How about we replace the Hawkeyes with someone up for the challenge. MichSt? Northwestern?

Lets try and see if another of our division would like to play on Black Friday, and put Iowa in their time slot. Easy solution. Friday after Thanksfiving or Thanksgiving day is NU football. Any other day would be a big disappontment, especially the Saturday.

Personally, I think Michiggan will eventually become our rival, not Iowa. I like Iowa, and you should love/hate your rival.

How about we dump the entire Pathetic TEN conference and move on to a real football conference. You know one that not everyone around the country makes fun of!

Not a SEC fan at all, actualy live in SEC country and while I was young we owned the SEC playing real Nebraska football and yes long before NU ever went to the Bad Ten myself and many others around the country recognized it as very weak in football as it's history of bowl game defeats proves without any shadow of doubt,, so yes i am being for real when i say we will struggle and may never return to prominance by giving up our southern ties for the weak Big ten conference,, time will tell but I believe the move to the Pathetic Ten puts the nail in our coughan of becoming at best a mediocre team.. But i must admit as realeted to the bandwagon comment, the SEC without a doubt has historicly been the best conf in football top to bottom,, were there many years during the 70, 80, and 90s that NU and OU could and DID spank the SEC Champion, yes they did and while living down here that was my saving grace to all the crap i had to listen to.. To try to compare in any remote way the Bad Ten and the SEC is like comparing a Corvette(SEC) to a Chevette(Big Ten) as a matter of fact the Big Ten cant hold a candle to the Big 12 and one cant say it is because they do things right as they have as many or more schools in trouble now than any other major conf.

Realign the divisions, put Wisconsin and Nebraska in the same division, and let them play on Black Friday. I have a feeling Alvarez would go for that!

How about we just move the Iowa game to September and schedule the SOONERS every year the day after Thanksgiving for the next 30 years or so. That works! ;-)
