Recruiting Profile: DT Maliek Collins
DT Maliek Collins | Kansas City (Mo.) Center HS | 6-2, 285
RANKINGS (stars, position ranking): Considered one of the top 50 or so high school defensive tackles in the country, Collins earned three-stars from both Rivals and 247Sports. Scout lists him as a four-star prospect.
Rivals: 3-star, 30 | Scout: 4-star, 25 | 247Sports: 3-star, 58
WHO ELSE WAS INTERESTED: Collins had a real solid list of regional scholarship offers from the likes of Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, and Iowa State. Kansas City has been good to Nebraska of late.
HOW HE FITS: According to all three of the recruiting services, Collins is the best defensive tackle Nebraska has signed so far and that’s a major position of need. Chase Rome and Thad Randle both have starting experience and are back for 2013, but there will be plenty of competition for jobs in the fall. Could Collins crack the rotation right away? The similarly sized Aaron Curry nearly did it last year as a true freshman before an injury effectively ended his 2012 season. Collins is also one of the best heavyweight wrestlers in the state of Missouri.
HOW HE LOOKS: Disruptive. Collins is a pretty violent tackler for a defensive tackle and, as you’d expect from a champion wrestler, he appears to understand leverage pretty well.
