Big Red Weekend Recap

There was a moment early on Friday where Nebraska's "Big Red Weekend" -- a relatively informal day on the recruiting calendar that had taken on disproportionate importance -- looked like a bust before it had even started. Much of the four-star type talent expected to be in town had canceled their visits for a variety of not-very-telling reasons. What was once a pretty impressive list of attendees was, judging from the online chatter Friday morning, turning into a "Meh." But then ...

Huskers land two commits on a fruitful Friday

Technically, Big Red Weekend hadn't even started yet but it's already a good weekend for Nebraska on the recruiting trail before Friday was even over. The Huskers picked up their fifth and sixth commitments for the Class of 2014 yesterday. The conversation coming into this weekend was about whether or not Nebraska was behind in recruiting. Now the Huskers are actually ahead of the normal schedule under Bo Pelini. First, Nebraska got its quarterback. Apopka (Fla.) High QB Zack Darlington visited Nebraska ...

A Big Red Weekend Primer

Nebraska expects to have around 15 to 20 recruits in town over the next few days for Big Red Weekend, the second iteration of what is now the Huskers' signature summer recruiting event. Things are always fluid in the recruiting game, particularly when the players are responsible for finding and financing their own way to Lincoln, so the list could change even at this late stage, but here are some of the notable names expected to be there this weekend. (Rankings ...

Are the Huskers falling behind in recruiting?

If Dave Gillespie was worried in the early days of 1993, he definitely wasn't going to admit it to the largest newspaper in the state. The Huskers had just lost the Orange Bowl 27-14 to Florida State nine days earlier. It was Nebraska's sixth straight bowl loss and fourth straight season where the Huskers fell outside of the Associated Press' final Top 10. But that wasn't Gillespie's biggest problem. His immediate concern was that the Huskers had just six players verbally committed ...

Report: O-lineman commits to NU

Nebraska's camp season, a keenly watched time period this year in particular, has delivered the Huskers' first commit and fourth overall. According to Nate Clouse of HuskerOnline.com, Highland Park (Ill.) High School offensive lineman Tanner Farmer, an aptly named Nebraska recruit if there ever was one, verbally committed to the Huskers today while in Lincoln for a Nebraska football camp. He was highly sought after in the Midwest with offers from Illinois, Missouri, Minnesota, and Western Michigan. Farmer's rankings according to the ...

Huskers land third 2014 commit

Sean Callahan of HuskerOnline.com reported Friday afternoon that Drew Brown, younger brother of former Nebraska kicker Kris Brown, verbally committed to the Huskers. He is the third player to pledge to Nebraska for the 2014 class. As a junior for the powerful Southlake Carroll program just outside of Dallas, Brown was 91-for-91 on extra points and 8-for-9 on field goals with a long of 29 yards. (The Dragons averaged more than 50 points per game last season. Few teams forced them ...

Big Ten ADs, coaches ask NCAA to reconsider new recruiting rules

If you think recruiting is a crazy game now, just wait until later this summer. That's when a series of new rules, revisions and repeals would essentially deregulate recruiting by allowing unlimited contact with prospects, additional recruiting staff, and the return of glossy promotional materials. Following a regularly scheduled meeting Monday in Chicago,  the Big Ten coaches and athletic directors released the following statement: We reviewed the 26 Rules Working Group proposals acted upon by the NCAA Board of Directors in January, ...

5 Intriguing Recruiting Battles in 2014

We're less than a week removed from Signing Day 2013 but it's already time to turn the page to 2014. That's recruiting. It never ends. Rivals released its first Rivals100 prospect ranking for 2014 on Monday. That provides an interesting context for this "cast a wide net" period in recruiting. Who is Nebraska after? Who does the staff think they can get on campus? So far, Nebraska has already extended nearly 80 scholarship offers for 2014 according to Rivals. Twenty-eight of those ...

The 2013 Walk-Ons

The storied walk-on tradition at Nebraska continued on Wednesday with 15 preferred walk-ons agreeing to play for the Huskers. Per NCAA rules, Nebraska could only announce 13 of those players. Here's a quick rundown of who's joining the team: JORDAN ACKERMAN (6-3, 245), DE/TE, Lincoln (Neb.) Southeast HS: An honorable mention all-state player in 2012, Ackerman could end up on either side of the ball at Nebraska. JORDAN BELLAR (6-0, 165), P, Norfolk (Neb.) Catholic HS: A versatile athlete, Bellar played quarterback ...
