Practice Report – Day Five

The Huskers donned full pads for the first time on Wednesday. Here’s the latest from practice:

–Incoming freshman defensive back Alonzo Moore has been cleared by the NCAA. “He’ll be joining the football team at some point,” coach Bo Pelini said. “We don’t have all those arrangements worked out on exactly when he’ll join us in camp.”

Moore was a Signing Day commitment for Nebraska and is expected to start out at corner.

Fellow freshman linebacker Jared Afalava is still awaiting word from the NCAA Clearinghouse.

–Junior college transfer cornerback Mohammed Seisay practiced in pads on Wednesday after “tweaking” his ankle earlier in the week.

Overall, Pelini said Nebraska has avoided injuries early in fall camp.

“I wish I had some wood to knock on,” he said. “We’ve been pretty healthy there so far.”

–Freed from installing a new offense, Nebraska has been able to start looking at different personnel groupings earlier this year.

“We’ve already been experimenting, moving guys around and using a lot of different personnel groups,” Pelini said. “There’s competition at every position, probably moreso than almost any time since I’ve been here. Hopefully that will make us a better football team as we move along.”

–Redshirt freshman defensive end Kevin Williams is pushing to get in the regular rotation on the defensive line.

“Kevin started slow and he’s come on in the last couple of days,” Pelini said.

Williams redshirted last year to recuperate from a knee injury but his development could be critical as Nebraska looks for a fourth option at DT behind Baker Steinkuhler, Chase Rome and Thad Randle.

Nebraska will practice under the lights again on Thursday before beginning their two-a-day sessions on Friday.
