Hot Reads: The Long Game

We're two days removed from signing day but the parsing of what the day actually means for a college football program is ongoing. Part of that's a reflection of this analytics age we live in and part of it is simply the availability of a new, (mostly) complete, data set. But it's still relatively small. "Big Data" hasn't really hit recruiting yet. Rival and Scout have databases that go back to only 2002, so the release of another year's worth ...

Pursuing Perception

It’s funny, really, how much perception spins the recruiting world. The Rivals100, the ESPN300, the 247 Composite rankings. The saturation of college football recruiting should theoretically cause competition within the market to smooth out the inconsistencies and bolster the quality of the product. Yet perception still dominates. As you step down from “macro” to “micro” in the recruiting universe, perception dominates even further. Perception of 17- and 18-year-old football players who choose to accept scholarship offers from Central Florida (fresh off its first ...

The 2013 Walk-Ons

The storied walk-on tradition at Nebraska continued on Wednesday with 15 preferred walk-ons agreeing to play for the Huskers. Per NCAA rules, Nebraska could only announce 13 of those players. Here's a quick rundown of who's joining the team: JORDAN ACKERMAN (6-3, 245), DE/TE, Lincoln (Neb.) Southeast HS: An honorable mention all-state player in 2012, Ackerman could end up on either side of the ball at Nebraska. JORDAN BELLAR (6-0, 165), P, Norfolk (Neb.) Catholic HS: A versatile athlete, Bellar played quarterback ...

Hot Reads: What Happens to all the Hats?

What happens to the hats of the teams that aren't chosen on Signing Day? Donated to Goodwill? Returned to the local Lids? Given to younger siblings? Jacquille Veii has hats from both Iowa and Nebraska. Hardly seems like he'd want them, cotton and wool second-guesses that they are. At the big high school powerhouses -- the Bishop Gormans and the De La Salles and the Manatees of the world -- I imagine the school janitor at the end of the day ...

The Soft Sell

“We get the kids that we want.” Bo Pelini said that on Wednesday during his press conference officially announcing the haul of recruits at Nebraska in 2013. Bo Pelini has used that line before on numerous occasions. It’s something of a mantra and certainly a convenient point of view. It’s not that much different than the approach of the most die-hard recruitniks, the people who live and die with each day in the build-up to National Signing Day. You’re either with us ...

Heard, Rome leaving the program

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini officially announced on Wednesday that running back Braylon Heard and defensive tackle Chase Rome will be transferring. Both would've been juniors in 2013 and both were ranked as four-star prospects by Rivals in the 2010 class. The news on Heard wasn't a surprise as seemingly everyone except for Pelini had spoken on the record about his rumored transfer. In two years at Nebraska, Heard had 77 total carries for 462 yards (6 yards per carry) and four ...
