Huskers Shut Down No. 3 Texas Tech to Open Frisco Classic

March 02, 2019

You could call Nebraska’s 2-1 win over No. 3 Texas Tech a big win, because it is. After losing four straight last weekend to the defending national champion Oregon State Beavers, it wouldn’t have surprised many if Nebraska lost a little confidence along the way. Instead, the Huskers walked into the Frisco College Baseball Classic and didn't even blink.

If you like defense, Friday night’s matchup between Nebraska and Texas Tech was the game for you. The Red Raiders are known for offensive power but Nebraska kept that in check thanks to an incredible performance on the mound from senior Matt Waldron, junior Chad Luensmann and freshman Colby Gomes.

Matt Waldron single-handedly kept Nebraska in the game through the first five innings. The only run Waldron gave up came after a questionable call at second base. The senior recorded seven strikeouts and only four hits against a high powered Texas Tech team.

When Luensmann came in, he picked up right where Waldron left off. He recorded four strikeouts for the Huskers. Luensmann looked like the Big Ten Freshman of the Year that Husker fans remember. Let’s just say if this guy can stay healthy . . . Look out.

Gomes came in to finish the deal for Nebraska, and was in command as soon as he hit the mound. He ultimately sealed the deal (and the win) for Nebraska. A head-scratching right field error in the ninth inning almost cost the Huskers, but Gomes stayed zoned in. He finished the game to get his first save of the year.

Mojo Hagge entered the game in the seventh inning and continued his offensive consistency. Hagge went 1-for-1 on the night, including the game tying RBI.

Both teams saw great performances from their pitchers. In the end, Nebraska out hit Texas Tech 6-4 on the night. The win is Nebraska’s biggest win ranking-wise in five years.

Nebraska has a quick turnaround in the Frisco College Baseball Classic. The Huskers will be back in action Saturday at 12 p.m. CT against Sam Houston State.
