There’s some good news and some bad news for Nebraska baseball (22-14). Let’s start with the bad news. The Huskers fell 2-1 to Creighton (23-8) on Tuesday night, giving the Bluejays the win in the season series between the two programs. It is also the first time since the 1992-1993 seasons that Creighton won back-to-back series over Nebraska, adding a little additional insult to injury.
But remember, there’s some good news here. What is it, you ask? It’s the fact that Nebraska does not have to play another midweek game this season. That really is good news, considering the fact that the Huskers have lost three of their last four midweek games. The rest of Nebraska’s remaining regular season schedule consists of just four weekend series.
When Nebraska and Creighton first met this season on Tuesday, March 26, the Huskers took an early 5-1 lead through the first three innings. Since then, the Bluejays outscored the Huskers 12-3 over the series’ next 24 innings. Creighton won 10-2 over Nebraska in Lincoln on Tuesday, April 9, and over the final 11 innings between that meeting and the final one, the Bluejays held the Huskers to only one run.
That one run came in the sixth inning on Tuesday. Spencer Schwellenbach and Aaron Palensky led with back-to-back singles, and Schwellenbach made it home after a wild pitch and a Gunner Hellstrom sac fly. That one run also tied up the game after Creighton took an early lead in fourth. The Bluejays didn’t let the Huskers keep the lead long, with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Nebraska got another chance to take the lead in the ninth. Joe Acker walked to start the inning, and Angelo Altavilla nearly gave Nebraska runners on at least second and third. However, the ball went foul on the right field line and he struck out a couple of pitches later. Cam Chick then walked and pinch hitter Mojo Hagge flew out to end the game.
With midweek games now behind them, the Huskers are back home this weekend for a three-game series with Illinois. First pitch is set for Friday at 6:35 p.m. CT on the Big Ten Network.
