The honor comes after Gomes helped Nebraska defeat No. 3 Texas Tech on Friday. The win was Nebraska’s first victory over a top five opponent since Feb 21, 2014.
Gomes contributed on the mound and at bat. He produced an RBI single in the seventh inning gainst Texas Tech that proved to be the game winner. That RBI helped preserve his own win. He recorded his first career save by pitching the final inning and retiring the final three batters in order with a pair of strikeouts.
Gomes is first Nebraska player to earn the Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors since Mojo Hagge on May 22, 2017. He joins sophomore Jaxon Hallmark in Big Ten honors for the season. Hallmark earned player of the week two weeks ago.
Nebraska travels to Waco, Texas, this weekend for a three game series with Baylor.
