Nebraska and athletic director Bill Moos announced a one-year contract extension for men’s basketball coach Tim Miles on Tuesday. With the extension, Miles is under contract through the 2020-21 season.
The Huskers went 22-11 overall and 13-5 in Big Ten play under Miles this year, qualifying for the NIT. The 13 conference wins were a school record and the 22 wins overall tied for the second-most in program history.
“Tim and his staff did an outstanding job this season with 22 wins and 13 Big Ten Conference victories,” Moos said in a release. “That type of performance certainly merits an extension of Tim’s contract as the leader of our men’s basketball program. I have been very impressed with the energy and passion Tim provides for the Nebraska men’s basketball program, as well as his commitment to his staff and the young men on our team.”
Miles is 97-97 overall with two winning seasons in six years at Nebraska. The Huskers have gone 46-62 in conference play during that stretch. Miles led Nebraska to the NCAA Tournament in 2014, his second year in Lincoln.
“We have great young guys in our program,” Miles said. “Our spring workouts are going well, and we are excited for next season. As this past season showed, we are building in the right direction. I am appreciative of the University administration and Athletic Director Bill Moos for their support of our program.”
Recently, assistant coach Kenya Hunter resigned at Nebraska to take an assistant coaching job at UConn under new coach Dan Hurley. Nebraska’s top 2018 recruit, point guard Xavier Johnson, decommitted from the program on Friday to explore his options.
Miles is currently in the process of seeking out candidates to fill the hole on his staff left by Hunter’s departure. The first live evaluation period of the spring begins on Friday and Nebraska still has two open scholarships to fill in addition to Johnson’s uncertain status.
Assistant coach Michael Lewis will visit former Papillion-La Vista stand-out forward Ed Chang on Tuesday after he decommitted from Washington and re-opened his recruitment last week. On Wednesday, Miles will visit Robert Morris graduate transfer Dachon Burke on Wednesday.
