They Said It: Nebrasketball-Iowa

January 06, 2017

Notable quotes from Nebraska’s 93-90 double overtime victory over Iowa.

Head coach Tim Miles on the game:

“I think you have to credit Iowa because for a long time tonight, they beat us at our own game being second chance points, doing a good job on the glass and they just took it to us, [Tyler] Cook, [Cordell] Pemsl, all those guys in there. I think as the game went on, we got better at that. What a game. I mean, it was dramatic. It was controversial, I guess. Don’t ask me what happened because I don’t know but what a game. I’m proud of our guys.”

On the excitement of the game:

“I don’t know if there could be a person at this game that didn’t just love being a part of this game, win or lose, and watching those two guards go back and forth and Tai Webster doing his deal was just really fun to be a part of.”

On the fans:

“I thought the crowd was awesome. I thought they were a huge part of us hanging in there. They were so supportive. It was easy for the guys to rally. We want to make this place ‘The Vault’ again. It hasn’t been truly. We need our fans and they were… Like I said, this was fun and they made it fun. It was just a heck of a game and I look forward to doing it all over Sunday afternoon. I think the NFL is going to wait until we play and then they’re going to play.”

Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery on Glynn Watson Jr.:

“He’s a terrific player. Yeah, he’s terrific. He’s been like that all year.”

On the officiating:

“I think they were trying their best to keep it clean and give both teams a chance. It was a tough game of officiating.”

Tai Webster on what this win means for the team:

“I don’t know. It’s tough. It seems like such a blur. The game was so long. I don’t really remember what happened in the first half or anything. I mean, I think it’s a true testament to show that we’re battle-tested. We had this tough schedule and it’s really showing that we’re coming together. I think you’re really seeing the result of us always talking about how we were the most together group that we’ve had in years and stuff like that. I think it’s really coming through and showing just how together we are.”

On how he feels after double overtime:

“I just want to go home, to be honest. I can’t feel my legs. They were cramping all second half. I was done in the second half really but thankfully Coach Lew [Michael Lewis] is good at getting in my head and really challenging me and luckily we responded.”

On Peter Jok:

“Obviously I’ve got to play tough and he’s an amazing scorer. Probably the best scorer I’ve played against ever to be honest. He’s amazing. I think I held him to what, six points in the first half or something like that? And then four points? It’s funny. I’m thinking like, ‘Oh, yeah. I’ve got him. This is what I do. I defend.’ It’s funny when I was struggling to even get court time, I’d always fall back on that defense. That’s what I take pride in, that defense. Back in my sophomore year when I was struggling to even get on the court, the defense is what got me on the court so I’m thinking when he’s at six points, ‘This is the best the Big Ten’s got to offer? The best scorer in the Big Ten?’ I’m like, ‘Wow.’ And then for him to come out and have what, 34? That’s like, ‘Wow, this guy is for real.’”

Watson on the resolve of the team:

“I knew it would come down to the end. We made some big free throws. We missed a lot of free throws but I just knew we would pull it off. I knew it would be tough. Coach Miles told us it would be tough. We showed we were the toughest team tonight.”
