Fred Hoiberg announced on Wednesday that senior forward Trevor Lakes will be out indefinitely because of a lingering shoulder injury.
Lakes underwent surgery on the shoulder back in March and went through an extended rehab period to make it back to the court, and he managed the issue throughout the season. A recent setback led to discussions between the medical and basketball staffs, resulting in the decision to begin a rehab program.
“This is disappointing for Trevor because of the work he has put in to come back after his surgery and try to help this team,” Coach Fred Hoiberg said in a release. “Our hope is that this plan gives him the best opportunity to get back to full health.”
Lakes was not in uniform on Tuesday during Nebraska’s loss to Illinois after playing in the previous four games. He played in eight games total this season, scoring 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
Lakes is the second frontcourt player the Huskers have lost this season after Wilhelm Breidenbach went down with a season-ending knee injury in early December. With options at the four behind Lat Mayen dwindling, Hoiberg used four-guard lineups with C.J. Wilcher at the four against the Illini. Keon Edwards is an option as well, but he’s played seven minutes total in the last seven games.
