Big Red Recon: Busy, Productive Spring Sets Table for Important Summer for Huskers

April 15, 2022

It’s hard to believe that we are already done with spring football. It feels like just yesterday we were meeting the new Nebraska assistant coaches to kick off the spring session. The team has plenty of questions to answer between now and the start of fall camp. There were so many new parts and moving pieces this spring. It is hard to get a solid feel for the direction of this group.

The Huskers did have a huge recruiting weekend last weekend. That visitor list and the Junior Days this spring laid a good foundation. The potential is there for the Huskers to have a solid class and keep an eye toward the future.

Let’s get to the Recon.

2023 Commits

Dwight Bootle, Defensive Back, Miami, Florida

Benjamin Brahmer, Tight End, Pierce, Nebraska

Gunnar Gottula, Offensive Lineman, Lincoln, Nebraska

Sam Sledge, Offensive Lineman, Omaha, Nebraska

William Watson, Quarterback, Springfield, Massachusetts

2023 Needs

QB 0 DL 3
RB 0 MLB 1
WR 2 OLB 2
TE 0 DB 2

The Recon:

>> The Huskers made a new in-state scholarship offer to Scottsbluff native Brock Knutson. That offer was made after the spring game. The offensive lineman is now up to double-digit scholarship offers, including Iowa State, Kansas State and Arizona State. He told Hail Varsity that he has an official visit set to Iowa State June 17-19. Knutson is still working on setting the date for his official to Nebraska. I’d expect that to be in June too. I like the Huskers’ position with the lineman.

>> Nebraska had several visitors from Georgia for the spring game. The program has worked hard to make inroads into the Peach State. Tight ends coach Sean Beckton told me it was important to get players from down south up to Nebraska for the spring game. The team got a chance to do more than that. Linebacker Dwight Johnson Jr. mentioned something interesting in his interview this week. He and the rest of the group came in Friday and left Sunday. That’s a lot more exposure to the program than a traditional one-day trip for the spring game. That could pay dividends for Nebraska in securing return visits.

>> When Nebraska took the commitment of Texas A&M transfer running back Deondre Jackson it caused an uproar. It turned out he wasn’t able to transfer because of academics. It appears that he has taken care of his work off the field to leave Texas A&M based on this tweet.

It still remains to be seen if he will end up in Lincoln. The running back room is crowded and getting fuller by the week. Gabe Ervin is set to return from injury. Ajay Allen and Emmett Johnson are joining the team this summer. The Huskers have needs elsewhere. A sixth scholarship running back would be curious unless one or two move on.

>> One of the more under the radar visitors the Huskers had on campus for the spring game was 2024 tight end Christian Bentancur. I spoke with him after his visit and he was blown away by what he found in Lincoln. He was offered by the Huskers and that started a nice streak for the Illinois tight end. Iowa, Penn State and Michigan all offered the week after his visit to Lincoln. Bentancur (6-5, 240) has the look of a big-time prospect in his class. The Huskers did well to get him on campus early and make a good impression. This will just be the start of his recruitment taking off.

>> I’ve been asked a few times where the commitments are from the big visit weekend. One player that I have on commit watch is defensive lineman Joshua Horton. Sources tell me that Nebraska has put itself in the lead in his recruitment. The Georgia native (6-5, 290) had 81 tackles and three sacks as a junior last season. The Huskers will need two take at least two high school defensive lineman this cycle. Horton has been very productive through his high school career and is poised for a big senior year.
