Recruiting never stops and it’s easy to miss the top stories day-to-day. Recruiting analyst Greg Smith recaps all things Nebraska recruiting news, analysis and more so you never miss a thing.
The Huskers are continuing to get local talent on campus for visits. Omaha Westside 2024 athlete Caleb Benning just took an unofficial visit to Nebraska. He was in Lincoln on Tuesday to check out Nebraska’s return to spring practice. This was Benning’s third trip to Lincoln since last season to see what the Huskers have to offer.
The athlete (5-11, 185) thought the visit went well. He’s continuing to build good relationships with the coaching staff. Benning was also able to speak with a couple players which was nice. Since he’s been to Nebraska multiple times his eyes were fixed on the little things on Tuesday.
“Just the sharpness, energy and competitiveness the team had,” Benning said. “The wide receivers and DBs were competing with each other. They were jumping up and down and were pretty energetic. It was overall good energy. I felt like the whole entire practice for the whole time was I was there was like that.”
Benning was able to speak with former Omaha Westside star Koby Bretz on Tuesday. He also caught up with Caleb Tannor and Marques Buford. Catching up with Bretz is great and so was picking the brains of current college athletes.
“It’s pretty surreal,” Benning said. “I know I wouldn’t get to play with Caleb if I went to Nebraska but maybe I could play with Marques Buford or Koby. The guys I look up to could be my future teammates. That’s a little hard to take in at times but pretty cool.”
Benning has mostly been recruited by Nebraska as a defensive back. That was the main position group he focused on while checking out practice. He kept a close watch on defensive backs coach Travis Fisher who he has developed a good relationship with. The defender liked the attention to detail that Fisher coaches with.
He also had a good relationship with defensive coordinator Erik Chinander. The pair got a chance to talk after practice was over and talk some football. The coach came out to Omaha Westside a couple times during the contact period. It means a lot that the defensive coordinator has taken a special interest in recruiting him.
Benning has more visits lined up after checking out Nebraska. He’ll head to Vanderbilt this Saturday. That’s where assistant coach Dan Jackson recently landed. It’s been expected that we’ll see Vanderbilt push into Nebraska more with him on staff. Benning will also check out an Iowa practice soon. Then he hopes to comes back to Nebraska for the Red-White Spring Game on April 9.
“The relationships are what I’m most looking for in a school,” Benning said. “It’s kind of a generic answer, but you can definitely tell when coaches are faking it and when they’re really genuine. “Nebraska is very genuine. I want to be wanted. Not just extend an offer and not really talk. So those are two big things.”
