Quarterback recruiting for Nebraska will be intriguing this cycle. It isn’t the most pressing need for the team on the surface but in today’s world of the transfer portal, recruiting a quarterback every recruiting cycle is smart. Mission Viejo High School 4-star (HV Rating: 89.6) signal caller Peter Costelli (6-3, 205) is one to watch out for with Nebraska. He has visited Lincoln twice so far. The first visit was for Friday Night Lights this past summer, then he returned for a game in the fall.
Now that we are in his football offseason, I reached back out to the multi-sport athlete to see how things are going. He’s spending his days training for football, keeping his arm sharp by throwing and making sure to get his lifts in. Track season is also underway for Costelli. He and his team are getting ready for their first meet in March. He participates in the 100m dash and the 4×1 relay.
Costelli continued to receive new football offers at the end of the season and into the contact period. His stock continues to rise as a prospect with the more exposure he gets.
“For new offers I recently got Arkansas, Georgia Tech and Northwestern,” Costelli told Hail Varsity. “They’ve been showing some interest. So right now it’s about planning and see where I want to look into.”
As for that planning, Costelli said that he will be back in Lincoln for a spring practice visit. He’s looking forward to getting another look at Coach Scott Frost’s program. Costelli does keep in touch with the Huskers on a regular basis, texting regularly with Mario Verduzco. The quarterbacks coach even stopped by Mission Viejo a couple of times during the contact period in January.
“It’s good,” Costelli said of his relationship with Verduzco. “We just talk about daily stuff. We’ve talked about the excitement about the new offensive coordinator [Matt Lubick] coming in. I haven’t gotten to talk to him yet.”
That upcoming spring practice visit will be key as a table-setter for Costelli. The quarterback also said that he plans to take his official visits early. He hopes to make a commitment at the end of spring or in the summer.
“I feel like I just want to make a decision so I can focus on my senior year,” he said. “Then I won’t have to worry about the decision of where to go.”
In a move that has become typical for quarterbacks, Costelli is on track to graduate early and enroll at his school of choice next January. He said that the depth chart at the school he chooses is not a big factor at all in his decision. He does have some criteria in mind though.
“The football energy, the relationship with the coaches and overall feel of the campus and everything,” Costelli said.
