For the 2019 recruiting class, running back coach Ryan Held has cast a wide net, having offered more than 25 running backs. One of the top running backs on the east coast, 3-star (HV Rating 88.4) Rahmir Johnson, is near the top of Nebraska’s board at his position. Johnson made the trip from New Jersey to Lincoln for junior day on Saturday and came away impressed.
“I thought it was a great trip. I like the environment and the atmosphere of the practice," Johnson said. "I’m building a great relationship with the coaches. I had nice talks with Coach [Scott] Frost and Coach [Ryan] Held about the features of Nebraska and how it would look to be a part of the team."
Johnson is a top target for Nebraska in 2019, and told me that he is definitely feeling the love from the coaching staff.
“Yeah, I talk to them almost every day. I think it’s great when coaches show how much they care. Especially at a place that I’m interested in a lot. It helps me a lot with making choices for my future and what school I want to attend.”
Johnson is hearing a lot from schools like Boston College, Rutgers, Ole Miss and North Carolina State. His offer list is sure to grow as he settles into being the feature back for Bergen Catholic High School. One thing Nebraska is using in its pitch to the speedster (10.54 in 100m and 21.4 in the 200m) is his fit in the offense.
“I would say it’s similar to my high school offense but its more creative," Johnson said. "I think I would fit perfectly with their offense. I had a one-on-one session with Coach Held to watch film of Oregon and UCF. He talked to me about how much of a good fit I would be in the offense.”
Johnson told me that he may head up to Rutgers this Thursday but then he’s going to focus on track the rest of the season. He won’t be making it to any spring games but is hoping to take an official to Nebraska this fall.
