On Wednesday, 4-star QB Adrian Martinez became the 4th player to commit to Nebraska in the span of a few days. Being the first quarterback of the Frost era will make sure that he is forever linked to Frost. He is commitment No. 11 overall and now the crown jewel of the recruiting class that is being rebuilt by Frost and his staff. Here are five thoughts on the huge flip.
Getting your No. 1 target is huge
Any year that you can identify a clear No. 1 target and then land him, it’s a big deal. This year in what is a transition class for Frost, it’s gigantic. This didn’t happen by accident though. Quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco called Martinez and offered him while Martinez and his dad were watching post-game coverage of the AAC title game. Verduzco was then in-home for a visit on Monday. Martinez and his dad took the official visit to Lincoln last weekend, then Frost and Verduzco flew from Orlando to Fresno Tuesday evening to make their final pitch. The Huskers were smart and relentless in pursuing Martinez.
The Nebraska-Tennessee battle has just begun
There is quite the interesting battle brewing on the recruiting trail between Tennessee and Nebraska. Nebraska took the first shot when it started the pursuit of Martinez that ultimately ended up in him flipping. However, Tennessee is set to host multiple targets of the Huskers this weekend for official visits. Three-star running back Jeremy Banks is taking an official to Knoxville this weekend as is top JUCO cornerback Jeremy Webb who decided to go there instead of Lincoln. The two programs are also in the mix for offensive lineman Jerome Carvin, wide receiver Jeshaun Jones and wide receiver Jacob Copeland.
QB tailor-made for the offense
In Martinez, Nebraska is getting pretty much exactly what Frost and Verduzco will be looking for going forward in a signal-caller. Martinez has a strong and accurate arm, makes good decisions and is a good runner. He completed 60 percent of his passes for 1,462 yards with 25 touchdowns and four interceptions as a junior.
Intangibles are off the charts
One of the things people often rave about with one of the current Husker quarterbacks, Tristian Gebbia, is how good his intangibles are. Martinez will be very similar in that way. He is a smart quarterback who makes quick decisions and handles himself like a quarterback. He’s been fantastic in interviews and will no doubt be a future leader on the team.
Right place at the right time
For all of this to come together, things had to line up perfectly for Nebraska. We detailed some of the path Nebraska took in flipping Martinez, but he had to be willing to listen. Tennessee’s long national nightmare of a coaching search opened the door for Frost but the hiring of Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt didn’t help the Vols hold onto Martinez. In the end, the effort by Nebraska and the perfect offensive fit won the day.
