5 Thoughts on Bellevue West’s 48-0 Win Over Omaha Burke

November 09, 2019

Hail Varsity was on the scene in Bellevue to check out the quarterfinal Class A matchup between (4) Bellevue West and (5) Omaha Burke. The Thunderbirds won it 48-0 in a game that they dominated from start to finish. Future Nothern Illinois running back Jay Ducker put on a show in the game scoring five touchdowns which pushed his career total to 104. Bellevue West came out on a mission to prove they are a force and that mission was accomplished.

Here are my five thoughts on the game.

Jay Ducker Show

The last time I saw the Thunderbirds in action it was during the regular season. I believed then that the run game led by Northern Illinois commit Jay Ducker would be the difference for them winning state. Ducker has another huge night Friday adding five touchdowns to his career tally. He’s such a patient runner with excellent vision and power.

Zavier Betts is Special

One of the best compliments I can give Betts is that he makes it look effortless on the field. It’s not and he works very hard at improving his game but it’s a skill to make it appear that way. His improved perimeter blocker helps to continue opening up the team’s run game. When he gets the ball in his hands he’s electric. You can see that on this 87-yard shovel pass he took to the house.

Devon Jackson Stands Out

It’s not often that a 10th grader or class of 2022 target really catches my attention on a Friday night. Yet in the case of Omaha Burke athlete Devon Jackson (6-3,190), you can’t miss him on the field. The Huskers and Illinois have already offered him a scholarship. Coach Scott Frost was at Burke this week in part to check on him. He will be a very intriguing outside linebacker to watch moving forward with his size and speed combination.

Bellevue West Defense has the Goods

The offense for the Thunderbirds gets the headlines. They are spectacular and have racked up points all season long. However, the defense being this good makes it very tough on opponents. Burke has no shortage of weapons on offense and the Thunderbirds completely shut them down with sound football all evening. Tip your cap to that defense and the coaches.

New Chapter for Burke

The Bulldogs have been on an incredible run the last few years which was punctuated by a Class A state championship last season. They will lose a strong senior class led by Notre Dame commit Xavier Watts after this season. That group graduating, which includes Jaylon Roussell and Michael Payne III, will usher in a new era for coach Paul Limongi’s bunch. I wouldn’t want to count them out next season but it’s going to be tough to replace all the talent and leadership lost over the past couple of years.
