5 Thoughts on Omaha Skutt Winning Nebraska’s Class B Title

November 26, 2019

The state championship games are here in Nebraska. Hail Varsity was at Memorial Stadium on Monday night for the Class B matchup between Omaha Skutt and Scottsbluff.

The rematch of last year’s final was a tight game with Skutt coming away with a win, 21-20. The game featured a few memorable performances on both sides. The SkyHawks have now extended their winning streak to 25 games as they are back-to-back state champions.

Here are my five thoughts on the game.

Harsh Is a Special Athlete

Harsh rushed for 348 yards on 44 carries and five touchdowns in the semifinal game. He also threw for 246 yards and three more scores. In the state title game, he had 42 carries for 228 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also chipped in a key interception on defense. He also had the play of the game and it was a punt.

Skutt Shows Heart

Scottsbluff marched right down the field and scored a touchdown on the opening drive of the game. The Bearcats threw just one pass on that drive. Skutt didn’t panic or lose its composure though. The SkyHawks just hung in there and kept calm. They found the resolve to stop a huge two-point conversion after the Bearcats marched down the field for a touchdown looking poised to take the lead.

I am consistently impressed with the SkyHawks ability to stay in the moment in big games. It’s what champions do.

Tyson Gordon Making Plays

Omaha Skutt star Tyson Gordon came up big for the SkyHawks, just as he has all season long. The state championship game was no different. The North Dakota State commit had 65 rushing yards, 40 passing yards, 40 punt return yards, 29 interception return yards, 2 touchdowns, 5 tackles, 1 interception and a pass break up. He made a huge play shooting the gap on a fourth down goal line stand that won’t show up in the box score. In short, he was awesome in leading his team to victory.

Key Performances for Skutt

It’s easy to lose track of a couple of other key players for Skutt when thinking about another huge Gordon performance. Let’s stop for a second and give props to running back Grant Diesing who rushed for 121 yards on just 10 carries with a big touchdown. Also, defensive back Nick Chambers had 12 total tackles for a defense that was tasked with slowing down Sabastian Harsh.

Epic Gordon Versus Harsh Duel

Coming into the game, the big matchup everyone was talking about was Harsh versus Gordon. At one point during the game, Harsh picked Gordon off on a tipped pass then the next drive Gordon returned the favor on a deep pass. The two stars came through in a big way for their teams in the exact way they had all season long to get to the state title game. Kudos to both for helping this game to live up to the hype.
