On Friday, Hail Varsity was in Omaha to check out what many people considered the game of the week between Omaha Westside and Creighton Prep. The game had to be moved to Omaha Benson on Friday night after the threat of lightning and storms in Omaha on Thursday night when the game was originally scheduled.
The game started off poorly for Westside after the Warriors threw an interception and allowed a safety to start the game. Things turned around quickly though as the Warriors scored 37 unanswered points to win the game over their rival Junior Jays, 37-2. The Warriors are now 5-0 and the Junior Jays fell to 3-2.
Avante Dickerson is the real deal
The talented sophomore lined up in the backfield, in the slot, at defensive back and as a return man. He showed his talent at every one of those positions but ultimately his college position is likely defensive back. Dickerson showed great coverage skills and instincts when the ball came his way. He got the ball rolling on 37 unanswered points by Westside.

Offensive and defensive line for Westside dominated the game
One of the big keys to playing Prep is matching the team's physicality. Westside was able to do that and then some in the game on Friday night. The rushing attack was able to get going for the Warriors with three different players scoring rushing touchdowns. The Warriors defensive line held Prep’s ground game in check all night as well.
Luke Sims plays with an edge
Sims is an impressive athlete with really good size that moves well. He got the game started in the right direction for Creighton Prep with a sack for a safety. He made plays all night from his defense end/outside linebacker spot on defense. He also ran tough while playing fullback.
Prep’s Ryan Bena anchors the line
It was a tough night for the Junior Jays in the trenches. However, one player did stand out above the rest: senior Ryan Bena. He’s one of the leaders on the team and will be in the running for another all-state selection. He’s got a quick first step after the ball is snapped.
Fun atmosphere
There is something special about a good rivalry in high school sports. The crowd was electric from the start of the game when the announcer called the game the “greatest rivalry in Omaha.” The game was probably one of the higher attended games we've been at this season, and the atmosphere would have likely been even better if the score had stayed close.
