5 Thoughts on Pius X 28-21 Double-Overtime Win Over Lincoln High

September 10, 2021

Hail Varsity was on the scene at Beechner Athletic Complex on Friday night. There was a crosstown matchup between Lincoln High and Pius X. We had an overtime thriller with a lot of action back and forth. Pius won the battle taking the game 28-21 on the road.

Here are my five thoughts on the game.

Ground and pound

There are a lot of people around the state that love seeing teams run the football. This was the game for you. Both teams ran the ball early and often on a muggy Lincoln night. Both defenses held up nicely for the most part. Pius X found a way to squeeze a little more of out the ground game and ride it to victory. This was an old school, 3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust type of game.

Shifting momentum

The game started slowly but it picked up big time in the second half. Just when I thought one team had grabbed the momentum and would pull away in the game the other team would make a big play. There was a stretch where Lincoln High had a questionable fumble that Piux X recovered. Then Lincoln High came right back and intercepted a pass on the next play to get the ball back. It was that type of back and forth game all evening.

Heat was a factor

Early season games in Nebraska re pretty well-known for being unbearably hot. I’ve been to a few games early this season where dehydration and cramps played a factor in the game. It was warm on Friday night and it certainly affected the game. As we moved through the fourth quarter and both overtimes you could see the fatigue setting in. The players in the trenches were gassed by the end of the game. They will definitely need their favorite sports drink after the game.

Better as game went on

Pius stuck with the run all game and it led them to victory. Junior running backs Matt Bohy and Cole Skorupa both had moments where they were tough to deal with for the Lincoln defense. Bohy carried the team down the stretch making tough run after tough run. That included this touchdown run that proved to be the game-winning score for Pius.

Standout juniors for Lincoln High

Lincoln High athlete Beni Ngoyi is a local player to watch.

Lincoln High has a pair of players that have taken unofficial visits to Nebraska. Defensive back Adonis Hutchinson (6-2, 175) was all over the field for the Links making plays. He was also big in the return game. The other standout is wide receiver/defensive back Beni Ngoyi (6-4, 180) and he made plays, too. Ngoyi was a frequent target when Lincoln High did pass the ball. But I’m interested to see more of him at defensive back. It will be fun to see these two develop.
