5 Thoughts on the Commitment of 4-Star Darien Chase

October 25, 2018

On Thursday, 4-star ATH Darien Chase‍ became the 18th known commitment of Nebraska's 2019 recruiting class. Chase is the second wide receiver to join the class, alongside 3-star wide receiver Jamie Nance.

Here are five thoughts on the commitment.

Versatile athlete

Chase is not only a talented receiver but he also excels in the return game and on defense. Versatility is key for skill position players moving forward. One of the impressive things about watching Chase on film is how natural he looks playing both corner and receiver. He’s also a good hands-catcher, which is something offensive coordinator Troy Walters looks for.

Speed Kills

Another thing you can’t help but notice when watching Chase's film is his speed and quickness. He runs well with the ball after the catch, showing off good straight-line speed and shiftiness. In addition to his speed, he boasts a 35-inch vertical that helps him track the ball down in the air.

Quick work

Nebraska offered Chase recently on Oct. 5, just one day before his visit to Boise State. The Huskers then hosted him for an official visit last weekend to see Scott Frost's first win with the Huskers. And he’s now in the class. Walters knew he wanted Chase in the class and made it happen quickly.

Toughness

Whether it’s on offense or defense, Nebraska likes players with that have the “dog” in them. Chase plays both ways for his Union High team and displays a willingness to be physical. That mindset should serve him well blocking on the edge for the Huskers' explosive ground game. His skill set fits the Nebraska offense very well.

All eyes on Kentucky

Now that Chase is officially in the class, Nebraska will likely only take one more receiver. That spot belongs to 4-star ATH (HV Rating: 91.7) Wandale Robinson out of Frankfurt, Kentucky. It just so happens that Robinson will be announcing soon on Nov. 1. With Chase on board, Walters, Frost and running backs coach Ryan Held can focus on reeling in Robinson to be one of the crown jewels of the class.
