Sources have indicated that quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco is making his way through Texas this week to evaluate quarterbacks for the class of 2021. On Monday, I looked at the quarterbacks to watch through the week. The Huskers have the great luxury of being able to really focus on the 2021 group since they have their man for 2020 in Logan Smothers.
On Monday, Verduzco stopped through North Shore High School in Houston to see 4-star (HV Rating: 93.1) signal-caller Dematrius Davis. North Shore has started spring practices.

The relationship between Nebraska and Davis is building. The dual-threat QB visited the Huskers back in March for a spring practice. He came away impressed with the program and really likes the offense that Nebraska runs. Davis is familiar with Coach Scott Frost’s background as a winner and told me that’s important to him.
In the 2018 season, Davis was excellent. He completed 71 percent of his passes for 3,350 yards and 49 touchdowns with just two interceptions. His team also won the state championship on a Hail Mary pass that he threw. He was also named MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year.
Competition for Davis will be strong. He has almost 20 scholarship offers from around the country already. This spring, he has taken unofficial visits to Arkansas, Florida State and Texas A&M. Assuming he has another big season during his junior year, expect even more attention to come his way.
Davis is not the biggest quarterback out there at 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds. However, he’s very strong and well put together. On film, he displays good pocket awareness and scrambles with his eyes downfield to make plays with his arm before taking off running.
I expect Nebraska to be in this recruitment until the end. Davis has stated that once he commits, there will be no more visits to other schools but he hasn’t laid out a timetable for a college choice. This week will be big for Verduzco’s evaluations but it would not surprise me if Davis emerges as the Huskers preferred “cube” for 2021.

Greg is the Recruiting Analyst for Hail Varsity and has covered Husker athletics since 2013. He has always had a passion for sports while growing up in the Chicago area. As he got older and had to hang up his cleats and sneakers, he realized his passion for sports went beyond just watching and attending games. He has covered many events from the Rose Bowl to championship boxing matches. If he’s not talking sports, he’s hovering over his grill. He is married to an amazing woman, Kim, and they have a dog that barks when Greg yells at the TV during games.
