Big Red Recon: Business Picking up for Huskers as Important Official Visits Get Set

May 13, 2022

We are still in the offseason for Nebraska football but things are picking up in a big way. Nebraska is lining up several official visits between now and the end of June. It’s going to be a very busy time on campus as the Huskers look to keep the recruiting momentum going. We are also just around the corner from camp season and Nebraska’s current players will be starting summer conditioning soon.

Let’s get to the Recon.

The Recon:

>> The Huskers made an intriguing JUCO offer on Thursday evening. College of the Canyons defensive tackle Taylor Lewis picked up an offer from Nebraska.

“First off, I couldn’t believe it,” Lewis said. “That’s one of my childhood dream schools and my coaches they let me know about the opportunity. I’ve been praying for a moment like this. So, I’m really just trying to take it all in and be get to step on campus and make things happen.”

Taylor (6-3, 285) had 18 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss last season. Once his grades post early in June he will be eligible to leave JUCO immediately and he intends to leave for his new school right away. Taylor said that Nebraska is a dream school for him because it’s in the Big Ten and he grew up watching Big Ten football. He feels that Nebraska is a good fit for him and his personality too.

The next step for Taylor is figuring out when he will take a visit to Nebraska. The Huskers mentioned him taking a visit on May 20th weekend but he currently has a visit to Oregon State set then. He’s in the process of figuring out if he will move that visit or not.

If the Chicago native visits Nebraska, I like the Huskers chances of adding him. The big question is if the team would take him and another defensive tackle this month.

>> The Huskers will host a pair of intriguing transfer portal options on the defensive side of the ball this weekend. Alabama safety Kaine Williams and Alabama defensive tackle Stephon Wynn will be taking trips to Lincoln. Williams is viewed as more of a long-term prospect since he has four years of eligibility left. He’d get a chance to crack the rotation but isn’t expected to be plug and play like many other transfers.

Wynn is at a position of need for the Huskers. He was a rotational player for the Tide and would fit nicely as a run stopper on Nebraska’s defensive front. The team is battling Georgia Tech for Wynn. He’s already visited the Yellow Jackets.

>> The May 20 weekend is shaping up to be a big one for the Huskers too. Hail Varsity has confirmed that two top Missouri targets 4-star offensive lineman Cayden Green and 3-star wide receiver Jaidyn Doss will be in town. It’s a big deal for the Huskers to get the first official visit for Green who is one of the best offensive linemen in the region. Green (6-5, 310) is the first big test for offensive line coach Donovan Raiola on the recruiting trail. The Huskers have a puncher’s chance with him.

Doss (6-0, 195) is a talented, versatile wideout. The team would be thrilled to land Doss, Joshua Manning and Malachi Coleman as the wideouts for the 2023 class. Manning is visiting June 3 weekend. Coleman has yet to announce or confirm his visit date but expect a June official to Nebraska.

>> The Huskers lost out on 5-star 2024 legacy quarterback Dylan Raiola when he committed to Ohio State. The question I’ve gotten from people around the Big Ten and in Nebraska is how this could happen.

It’s not as simple as saying Ohio State is the better program right now. That’s true but it’s more about the why they are a better program. Sources tell me that the Raiola family found Ohio State’s operation to be more detailed oriented and has a better plan for the quarterback’s future. Coach Ryan Day was a big positive in the Buckeyes’ favor. It helps the Buckeyes but that they have a lot more recent success to prove that plan. Nebraska had a better chance with Raiola than most people give it credit for. They just didn’t do a great job of keeping the foot on the gas in the recruitment.
