Big Red Recon: Closing Out Nebraska’s 2021 Recruiting Class

January 29, 2021

The end of the 2021 recruiting class is in sight. It’s been a strange winding road but we made it. There won’t be a lot of fireworks for the Huskers next week but Nebraska will get the letter of intent from Hawaii linebacker Wynden Ho’ohuli to make things official. The big storyline for Nebraska on Wednesday is the decision of Omaha Westside cornerback Avante Dickerson. Nebraska still intends to hold one spot for a potential transfer down the road.

Let’s get to the Recon.

The Recon:

>> Things are getting interesting with Omaha Westside cornerback Avante Dickerson. He did take a trip on his own dime with his mom to see Oregon last weekend. He is strongly considering the Ducks. I’m still told some things have to break right with their remaining spots to take him. Dickerson is set to announce Wednesday morning. It’s a coin flip right now between Nebraska and Oregon. I’d still give the slight edge to Nebraska.

>> Talking to people in and around the program it is a mixed bag on the offensive tweaks most desire being in the works. Some are convinced Frost is tweaking the offensive approach. The use of bigger receivers and signing of Markese Stepp could be signs of changes. So could Frost potentially giving play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Matt Lubick. This will be something to watch come spring ball. I need to see or hear more to believe it.

>> Its more likely that Nebraska waits until the summer to add a quarterback to the mix. That’s if they do it at all. The way things stand now the feeling is that the team wants a full evaluation of Logan Smothers and Heinrich Haarberg before adding someone to the mix. That’s always subject to change depending on who comes available but where we are today.

>> We could see some light at the end of the tunnel on the dead period. Pete Thamel of Yahoo reported the NCAA may go to a quiet period on Apr. 16. That would allow Nebraska to have two full weeks of unofficial visitors during spring practice. The Red-White spring game on May 1 would also be used for visits. There are hurdles to clear with health and safety but thing could be moving in a positive direction.
