We are almost there, Husker fans. Before you know it, spring football will kick off for Nebraska. It will be a fascinating spring filled with position battles that could last through the fall. It could also be a pivotal year for Coach Scott Frost to get the program moving in the right direction. Things will be picking up soon in the recruiting world. Still, there are things for us to discuss.
Let’s get to the Recon.

The Recon:
>> In what can be described as perfect timing, I am hearing really things about early enrollee kicker Chase Contreraz. It’s expected that he will be the starter at kicker this season barring anything weird happening. That didn’t have much to do with Barret Pickering’s decision to leave the team though. That was a medical decision that I’m sure was difficult to make.
>> Omaha Westside star cornerback Avante Dickerson picked up another big offer on Thursday when Penn State entered the race for him. I still think Dickerson, who is the highest-rated recruit in the state, doesn’t get talked about enough. Part of that is that he doesn’t do many interviews and part is because Travis Fisher has earned the benefit of the doubt. Dickerson has plenty of options all over the country but I’m still holding firm on my prediction for him to be a Husker.
>> There are plenty of storylines to follow this spring for Nebraska football. One that might determine the ceiling of the defense is how far along the defensive line can come. It’s not a position that lacks bodies but so many players are unproven. Ben Stille is basically the only player you can assume you know what you are getting from him. Not including the incoming freshmen, everyone else is a wildcard.
Defensive Ends
- Deontre Thomas
- Casey Rogers
- Tate Wildeman
- Mosai Newsom
- Pheldarius Payne
Nose Tackles
- Damion Daniels
- Ty Robinson (could bounce back out to end)
- Jordon Riley
- Keem Green
There is plenty of potential to like in that group. I also happen to believe the unit will surprise fans with their play in 2020. But this season we will find out a lot about defensive line coach Tony Tuioti.
>> As we turn toward spring football, we will also be confirming players making their way to Lincoln. One important prospect is 4-star quarterback Peter Costelli. The signal-caller tells Hail Varsity that he will be back in Lincoln for Junior Day on March 14. visit. The Huskers have locked in on Costelli who will be deciding on a college prior to his senior season.

Greg is the Recruiting Analyst for Hail Varsity and has covered Husker athletics since 2013. He has always had a passion for sports while growing up in the Chicago area. As he got older and had to hang up his cleats and sneakers, he realized his passion for sports went beyond just watching and attending games. He has covered many events from the Rose Bowl to championship boxing matches. If he’s not talking sports, he’s hovering over his grill. He is married to an amazing woman, Kim, and they have a dog that barks when Greg yells at the TV during games.
