Big Red Recon: Eventful Week for Nebraska, Scott Frost and Trev Alberts

November 12, 2021

What a week in Nebraska football. Bye weeks are supposed to be quiet but this one was anything but. Nebraska let everyone know that Scott Frost would return for a fifth season. Before the dust settled on that news the announcement came that four assistant coaches would be let go. There are big changes coming to Nebraska football for the 2022 season. Frost will have to make those decisions quickly as the early signing period approaches.

Let’s get to the Recon.

The Recon:

>> In a way the judgement of athletic director Trev Alberts’ tenure began on Monday. The decision to retain Frost on a restructured deal is his first major decision. It’s partly a “free roll” for Alberts though. If Frost continues to underperform in 2022 and is fired, then Alberts saved the university money. If Frost bucks all trends and turns the program around, then Alberts looks great for showing extra patience. The spot Alberts finds himself in might be the best-case scenario all things considered.

>> Nebraska star defender JoJo Domann announced on Thursday that he will be sitting out the final two games of the season. He elected to have surgery on Monday to fix a hand injury. The injury occurred during the Purdue game and he played well with it for the Ohio State game. Now Domann will be able to start rehab early and get ready for the NFL Combine. I’m curious if any other Huskers make the same move. There are other Huskers with NFL aspirations on the team. Frost noted on Wednesday that no one else has left the team, so maybe it won’t happen. It’s something to keep an eye on.

>> There are a handful of players with intriguing decisions to make after the season. Several Huskers are going to want to see if they have good enough NFL Draft grades to leave school. One that might surprise people a bit is center Cam Jurgens. He’s had a good season and will test very well at the NFL Combine. It wouldn’t be stunning to see him leave school after this year. The new offensive line coach will play a role in this decision, too.

>> We’ve talked a lot about recruiting for the 2022 class being impacted by the massive coaching staff changes this week, but there is one big thing to keep an eye on for the 2023 class. Louisiana quarterback Reese Mooney will have an announcement on Nov. 22.

The Huskers don’t currently have a quarterback coach for him. For the Huskers it might be best if he delays the decision, unless Frost can make a strong pitch that he should still commit to the Huskers. If he still makes that announcement on Nov. 22, I have a hard time seeing him picking the Huskers. He will visit Georgia Tech this weekend.

>> It was no surprise that tight end coach Sean Beckton was the lone offensive coach retained. He’s done a great job with his position group. Beckton is also a respected sounding board for Frost. He’s also a big-time recruiter in the Southeast.

“There’s so much that goes into these decisions and coaches have to fill a lot of roles,” Frost said. “They have to coach, they have to mentor, they have to recruit, they have to get those guys to play well and execute. Sean Beckton is, I think, elite at all of those things.

It makes me wonder if Beckton is in line for a pay bump and title change during all the restructuring on the staff that is happening.
