Big Red Recon: Huskers Have a Promising Start at DE in 2018

May 11, 2018

Last weekend, Nebraska picked up the fifth commit of the 2019 class when 3-star running back Rahmir Johnson joined the class. Since then the staff continued to stay busy all around the country evaluating prospects and offering new scholarships. Earlier in the week I caught up with a big defensive tackle who sees "big things" ahead for the new staff. There is plenty of news to get to in this week’s Big Red Recon.

Additional Recon

>>Over the last week Nebraska has offered a couple of Husker legacy players which is always nice to see. It’s even better when they fit a huge position need. Three-star cornerback Javin Wright‍ from Chandler, Arizona, is the son of former Blackshirt Toby Wright. I caught up with the big cornerback (6-3, 190) who says he was speechless when he got his offer from Nebraska. He had high praise for Erik Chinander and said he can tell he is great coach and you can tell he knows what he is doing. They talked about visiting Lincoln soon, within the next couple of months. I’ve put in a prediction for him to join the class.

>>One of the more interesting 2020 prospects that Nebraska offered this week is 3-star linebacker Daved Jones‍ from West Chester, Ohio. Jones has good instincts and speed from his linebacker spot for Lakota West High School. He told me that his main point of contact at Nebraska has been Ryan Held. When I asked about his relationship so far with Held, he was pretty positive. “I really like him, he seems like a really cool coach. I’d really love to come out there and see the campus and meet the rest of the staff.” His other offers right now are Cincinati, Kentucky and Louisville.

>>Offensive lineman continues to be a huge need for the class of 2019 where I expect Nebraska to try and take multiple JUCO lineman and multiple prep prospects as well. One new offer went out this week to unrated OL Matthew Anderson‍ from Leesville, Louisiana. The Huskers have only been in contact with Anderson for about a week according to him but his main point of contact has also been Held.

“I really like him, Anderson said.” I really like the way he talks and the overall Nebraska’s brand of football. I really believe what they say. They are not sugar-coating things but telling me the facts so I appreciate that."

Anderson did have prior knowledge of staff because he had heard about “their amazing turnaround at UCF.” That prompted him to do research on the pipeline which made him even more ecstatic about the offer. He is definitely wanting to visit Lincoln over the summer and would attend a camp if that’s what Greg Austin wants. An interesting note on Anderson is that while he lives in Louisiana, his family is from up north and he did not grow up an LSU fan.

>>My conversation with 4-star defensive end Marcus Hicks‍'‍ father, Kelvin, in which the elder Hicks says Nebraska is gaining ground got me thinking. Not necessarily about his recruitment but about where Nebraska stands recruiting defensive ends in the 2019 class. Four-star Ty Robinson‍, 3-star Mosai Newsom‍,  3-star Isaac Townsend‍ and 4-star Stephon Wright ‍are all legitimate options. That’s before you get to any number of hybrid DE/OLBs that are being targeted. Garrett Nelson‍ is already in the class as well. Mike Dawson will need to finish it off, but Nebraska is in great position at defensive end where great teams tend to clean up in recruiting.

>>One of the players Nebraska is recruiting to that hybrid outside linebacker role is 4-star defensive end Jermaine Johnson. The Independence Community College prospect was in Lincoln yesterday on an unofficial visit. By all accounts the trip went well and Nebraska should remain in the mix until the end.
