Big Red Recon: Intriguing Camp Battle and Early Evaluation Wins

March 06, 2020

We made it Husker fans. Spring practice start in just a few days so Nebraska football will be back in everyone’s life for a while. It’s an important spring in many ways for coach Scott Frost and his program. We will also see an uptick in unofficial visitors coming through campus leading to a Junior Day on March 14.

Let’s get to the Recon.

The Recon:

>> This spring there is going to be a lot of talk about the quarterback battle and who (if anyone) can make a move on Adrian Martinez. The position battles I’m watching most closely are on the offensive line. That sounds strange considering all five starters return. However, the dominant storyline will be if Bryce Benhart is ready to take over at right tackle. That causes a trickle-down effect of Matt Farniok sliding to guard. Then you’d have a battle between Trent Hixson, Boe Wilson and Ethan Piper for one guard spot. Going into spring all we know for sure on the line is that Cam Jurgens is the center and Brendan Jaimes is the left tackle. The rest will be fun to sort out.

>> Despite the statement put out by Coach Scott Frost this week, I would be shocked if wide receiver JD Spielman returns to Nebraska. I have a hard time remembering a situation where a player steps away from the team and school, goes home and then returns. It’s best for the team to prepare for the season without him this spring. If he were to come back it should be treated as icing on the cake but not expected.

>> Thomas Fidone’s offer list looks like it should for a top 100 recruit in the nation. His latest offer from was from Ohio State on Thursday evening. Rare when when a prospect gets all the big offers in the area that he wants. Nebraska, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Iowa will be battling to the end for Fidone. The question now is what happens with his visits? He told me this week that he plans to visit Notre Dame and Michigan this month. There are open invites to Nebraska and Iowa but he needs to see other places to make an informed decision. If he sticks with his original plan, summer official visits are coming.

>> In what has become a pattern for Nebraska, the Huskers were early on a prospect that has now seen his recruitment go to another level. Remember when California defensive lineman Derek Wilkins visited Lincoln in January? He left that visit impressed with Lincoln but at that point Cal was the other school pursuing him most. Since then he has shot up the rankings and is a 4-star now. He also picked up offers from Michigan, Stanford, Oregon and others. Nebraska’s talent evaluation continues to impress. Wilkins hopes to make it back to Lincoln for the spring game in April.
