Now that the evaluation period is over, the Nebraska coaching staff is launching fully into camp season. Starting today, the staff will be out at satellite camps while also hosting their own camps in Lincoln. It’s been awhile since Nebraska picked up a commitment but business should be picking up over the month of June.
Between the camps, unofficial and official visitors coming through Lincoln it will be another busy summer of recruiting activity.
Let’s get the Recon.
Zavier Betts, wide receiver, Omaha, Nebraska
Turner Corcoran, offensive lineman, Lawrence, Kansas
Logan Smothers, quarterback, Athens, Alabama
>> Nebraska made the top 5 for Florida inside linebacker target Ty Berrong on Thursday. The defender from the Sunshine State hasn’t been talked about a lot but the Huskers have been recruiting him hard for quite some time. They are in a sneaky good spot with him. This could end up being a Big Ten battle, as Purdue is also recruiting him hard.
>> Omaha Burke star wide receiver Xavier Watts is narrowing down his recruitment. Iowa State, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Michigan, Notre Dame and Nebraska are the official final six. The only official visit that is locked in is to Notre Dame on June 21. An official visit to Michigan for their season opener is a possibility. Watts told me that he is also considering coming back to Lincoln for an unofficial visit next Friday. I still have this as a Notre Dame versus Nebraska battle with Michigan as a dark horse.
>> Earlier this week, 2021 quarterback Peter Costelli picked up his first offer and it was from the Huskers. I immediately got messages from fans saying that other schools would follow suit now that the Huskers had offered. Oregon, Oregon State and Arizona all followed suit with an offer this week. Costelli is a good prospect so offers were bound to come his way but it’s just interesting to see Nebraska be first again on a prospect who is now blowing up.
>> In Thursday’s notebook I mentioned that Nebraska will be in St. Louis for the Lindenwood Mega Camp on Friday. I wouldn’t be surprised if offensive line coach Greg Austin, tight ends coach Sean Beckton, defensive backs coach Travis Fisher and offensive coordinator Troy Walters were the Husker coaches in attendance.
>> In the hunt for 2020 outside linebackers, not many will rate higher on the board than 4-star Kaden Johnson from Minnesota. Another Big Ten battle is brewing here between the Huskers, Gophers and Badgers. Johnson will take an official visit to Wisconsin this month. I reached out to ask if he’d be taking a summer official to Nebraska:
“I’m still trying to figure out a good date that will work because I want to take a game day visit to Nebraska.”
It seems like Johnson would be a great candidate for an early season official. Maybe for the Northern Illinois game since it’s a 7 p.m. CT kickoff.
