Big Red Recon: Moving Forward with Husker Football This Fall

September 21, 2020

Husker football will be played this fall. After a lot of hard work by the conference and pressure from the outside, there is a plan in place right now to play Big Ten football. That’s great news for Nebraska sicne the Huskers have been at the forefront of wanting to play. Things will get ramped up immediately as we march towards the Oct. 23 and 24 weekend to kick the season off.

Beyond that, there is plenty to get into with recruiting and behind the scenes in the program.

Let’s get to the Recon.

The Recon:

>> One of the big storylines for Nebraska’s 2021 recruiting class is if Norris tight end James Carnie will get a scholarship offer. I would never say something like this is 100% but right now I’d say Carnie will not get an offer. It’s unfortunate because Carnie has worked hard to put himself in position for an offer and loves the Huskers. Right now, I’d say they just don’t have room for a third tight end with other needs on the team. It’s also worth remembering that the staff is very high on AJ Rollins’ potential and the team has two good local tight ends this cycle.

>> The other thing tied to the Carnie situation is the numbers for the 2022 cycle. Right now, Nebraska is leading for both Kaden Helms out of Bellevue West and Max Whisner from Kansas. Both are tight ends with high ceilings that Nebraska identified early in the process. I’ve got a prediction in for Whisner to be in Nebraska’s 2022 class and don’t see a reason to change it yet.  Would taking a third tight end this cycle impact their standing with the prospects they like in 2022? There is a lot to consider in this situation.

>> One of Nebraska’s key components to the student-athlete experience at the school is coming back. Moos said on Sports Nightly the training table will come back for football athletes only. He explained the desire to not “cross contaminate” and risk athletes of other sports by bringing it back. Opening that back up for football will be huge as they start preparing for the season to begin on the weekend of Oct. 23 and 24.

>> Cade Johnson, who is one of the most intriguing players in the transfer portal, announced his intentions with a tweet on Thursday afternoon.

It’s interesting that Johnson has kept his options open for returning to college football. He could elect to finish his career at South Dakota State in 2021. Johnson also has a long line of suitors at the Power 5 level that may get longer by waiting to next year. He could also end up entering the upcoming draft. I still expect Nebraska to try to bring him in if possible but Johnson has lots of options to sort out.

>> In my time over the last month covering Lewis Central games, I’ve mentioned a few times how impressed I am with sophomore Jonathan Humpal. The do it all athlete has played well on offense, defense and special teams for the Titans. I think the 2023 prospect could be an early offer type of player for Nebraska. Lewis Central has been a nice program for years so it’d be great to build a little pipeline into it that started with Thomas Fidone.
