We finally made it. The dead period is over after a long 16 months. Players are visiting campuses and attending camps. We’ve already seen a number of new scholarship offers picked up by recruits.
Nebraska has had coaches out on the road this week working camps in Florida and Georgia. The program will also have coaches at the Lindenwood camp this weekend. The first Friday Night Lights camp is on June 4, which is also the first official visit weekend. It’s a busy time.
Let’s get to the Recon.

The Recon:
>> One quick housekeeping note to pass along. There are no academic hurdles for the 2021 class arriving to Lincoln this month. In most years there is a player or two that is awaiting final transcripts or will be on the borderline. The rules are different this year which is part of the fallout from the pandemic. Not having to be concerned about that is nice for the players and Nebraska’s staff.
>> Hail Varsity reported on Thursday that former 5-star defensive back from Ohio State Tyreke Johnson was in Lincoln on a visit. The Florida native was actually the Huskers’ first official visitor of the summer. He’s scheduled to be in Lincoln Thursday and Friday to see what the Huskers have to offer. The Huskers are looking to boost the defensive backfield this summer. Between attrition and lack of experience at corner there are reasons why the team is looking to bring in help at the position. We’ll see how things shake out with Johnson but he sat behind four NFL Draft selections at Ohio State including a pair of first rounders. The talent is worth the gamble.
>> One more quarterback has come off the board that Nebraska was pursuing. Georgia native MJ Morris committed to NC State on Thursday. At one time Morris was the number one target on the Huskers board. He even took a trip to Lincoln for the spring game to get a closer look at the program. Things got murky after that. The Huskers began to pivot toward quarterbacks Richard Torres and AJ Blanco. My feeling is that Nebraska was put off by Morris not wanting to meet with the coaches before committing. The team also may have wanted to see him throw in person after questions about his arm strength surfaced this summer.
>> The Huskers will have eight official visitors this weekend. QB Richard Torres, DL Nico Davillier, DL Jalen Marshall, WR Landon Samson, TE Chase Androff, RB Justin Williams, OL Ashton Craig, OL Valen Erickson will all be in Lincoln this weekend. We’ve got a full visit preview on the site now. If I had to single out a player to put on commitment watch it would be offensive lineman Valen Erickson. He’s high on the Huskers and doesn’t have another official visit line up yet.
>> The Huskers will look to make a huge impression on Torres. He’s got an official visit scheduled for Kansas State next weekend. If the Huskers do enough that he wants to commit this weekend, I think they’d accept his commitment as their class of 2022 quarterback.
>> The running back room continues to be a mystery for Nebraska. Right now if you made me select the top three players I would go with Gabe Ervin, Jaquez Yant and Marvin Scott. I think it’s wise to be in wait and see mode on Markese Steep given his injury history. Sevion Morrison has a chance to crack the top group if he has a big summer.
>> There are about 20 players coming in this weekend to do private workouts for the Huskers. I think a lot of the players that would have been Friday Night Lights standouts got invitations to work out privately instead. That will provide an interesting wrinkle this summer but it also provides an opportunity for players who are off the radar to impress at camp on Friday night.
