Big Red Recon: Pieces Falling Into Place For Huskers

August 23, 2019

We are so close to the start of the 2019 football season. The Nebraska football team has turned its attention to South Alabama game prep. There has been a lot happening in the recruiting world this week for the Huskers, too. The commit drought ended when Oklahoma running back Sevion Morrison committed to the team. The Huskers could also be on the verge of picking up another commit.

Let’s get to the Recon.

Class Breakdown

The Recon:

>> Let’s kick things off with some news about a big-time 2021 target. Iowa outside linebacker TJ Bollers told Hail Varsity that he has set up his visit schedule for the fall.

  • Vanderbilt 8/31
  • Iowa 9/7
  • Iowa State 9/14 & 11/16
  • Wisconsin 9/21 & 11/9
  • Nebraska 9/28 & 10/26
  • Kansas State 10/5
  • Michigan 11/30

Bollers is one of the top defenders in the region for 2021. He has already been to Lincoln multiple times. In a normal scenario, he would be a lock to go to Iowa. Yet, this is not a typical scenario. His dad played for the Hawkeyes but his roommate was Huskers defensive coordinator Erik Chinander. The family is doing their due diligence but Nebraska has done a terrific job recruiting Bollers. Look for the Huskers to be in this one until the end.

>> As reported by Hail Varsity on Monday, Florida running back Marvin Scott III will be announcing his college choice on Saturday. I still feel good that the pick will be Nebraska. That should wrap up running back recruiting for Ryan Held this cycle. Held would then have a bit of extra time to work ahead on 2021 backs and really focus in on top JUCO target Omar Manning.

>> A quick note on new walk-on transfer Zach Schlager. The inside linebacker was immediately elevated to the 110-man roster. To me, that shows a couple of things. First, there is a lack a depth at that position. Secondly, we can expect to hear his name in the mix next season for a lot of playing time. The staff is thrilled to pick up the Colorado State transfer, and former McCook star, and a year spent with Zach Duval while learning the defense should have him ready to go for 2020.

>>Speaking of linebackers, there were a lot of them on Greg’s Guys this month. Kaden Johnson, Jackson Bratton, Choe Bryant-Strother and Devyn Curtis all made the list. Caleb McCullough and Mister Williams were two more linebackers that missed the cut. Like I mentioned last week, Nebraska is not giving up on Wisconsin commit Malik Reed.

Nebraska is certainly prioritizing linebacker, treating it as a huge need.

>> Keep an eye out for Highland Community College defensive lineman Travis Geiger. The Huskers don’t have to take a JUCO defensive lineman this cycle but if they do my money is on Geiger. The former teammate of Jahkeem Green is bigger than the newest Husker defensive lineman. Geiger projects more to the nose tackle. Highland has a bye the same week as the Northern Illinois game.

>> Nebraska quarterback commit Logan Smothers kicked off his senior season at Muscle Shoals. He had a huge night on Thursday:

Rushing: 8 carries, 98 yards, 1 TD

Passing: 15-for-23, 206 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT

Total: 304 yards, 4 TDs

Smothers did all that in three quarters. He’s also been putting in work in the weight room. Since the end of his track season he’s put on 10 pounds. He recently power cleaned 275 pounds with a goal of getting over 300 pounds before the end of his senior season. I’ll call my shot now that the QB battle post-Adrian Martinez will be very tough.
