We are fully in the “dog days” of summer as it relates to college football news. The good news is that we are actually toward the end of it as list season is just around the corner. Before you know it, Big Ten Media Days will be here which marks the unofficial start of college football season.

The Recon:
>> There has been a lot of chatter around the web on Omaha Burke wide receiver Xavier Watts and his decision to pick Notre Dame. I noticed a lot of arrogance from Notre Dame writers about how he was always going to pick the Irish and Nebraska wasn’t really in the mix. That’s simply not the case. According to a source very close to his recruitment, he went back and forth quite a bit between the schools. In the end, that doesn’t matter that much since Notre Dame was the pick but this wasn’t a huge slam dunk for the Irish.
>> On a related note, new Nebraska commit Will Nixon was not a “Plan B” for Watts. First, Nixon is a good prospect and an excellent fit within Nebraska’s offense. He will be very good in the slot for the Huskers in the future. Watts would have been more of a Stanley Morgan-type wideout in this offensive attack. Both types are needed but their recruitments were not related despite the timing.
>> Earlier this week, I wrote a recruiting notebook on the Huskers wanting a defensive line haul in the 2020 class. One of the names that was specifically talked about was Marquis Black out of Georgia. In talking to Black, Hail Varsity has learned that he will be taking an official visit for the Ohio State game. It seems like that game will be a huge one this season both on the field and for recruiting.
>> I have a quick update on Huskers commit Zavier Betts’ injury sustained at The Opening. Luckily it was just a sprain and he will be full-go for the start of the season. According to a source, he also had a bit of a hip injury and some time off will help get that healed up as well. Betts is a special athlete.

Greg is the Recruiting Analyst for Hail Varsity and has covered Husker athletics since 2013. He has always had a passion for sports while growing up in the Chicago area. As he got older and had to hang up his cleats and sneakers, he realized his passion for sports went beyond just watching and attending games. He has covered many events from the Rose Bowl to championship boxing matches. If he’s not talking sports, he’s hovering over his grill. He is married to an amazing woman, Kim, and they have a dog that barks when Greg yells at the TV during games.
