Big Red Recon: The Start of an Important Stretch for Nebraska Recruiting

May 20, 2022

Official visit season is in full swing for the Huskers. Things are heating up on campus as the team looks to have a very busy summer hosting visitors and putting on camps. The next six weeks will be filled with news and notes from the recruiting trail. To kick things off the team will host four official visitors this weekend including 4-star offensive lineman Cayden Green out of Kansas City. This is an important stretch for the Huskers to build the 2023 recruiting class.

Let’s get to the Recon.

2023 Commits

Dwight Bootle, Defensive Back, Miami, Florida

Benjamin Brahmer, Tight End, Pierce, Nebraska

Gunnar Gottula, Offensive Lineman, Lincoln, Nebraska

Sam Sledge, Offensive Lineman, Omaha, Nebraska

William Watson, Quarterback, Springfield, Massachusetts

2023 Needs

>> The Huskers were one of the first schools get the offer train rolling for College of the Canyons defensive tackle Taylor Lewis. The defender was thrilled with the offer calling the Huskers one of his dream schools. He grew up watching them in the Big Ten and likes the Huskers’ style of play. Now as his recruitment has taken off he has a lot of options to sift through. Before his recruitment blew up he had an official visit set to Oregon State for May 20 weekend. He kept that on the books out of loyalty. A visit to Arkansas is set for the following weekend.

Nebraska and Missouri will likely get the final two visits but that hasn’t been set in stone yet. I wouldn’t sleep on Arkansas in this recruitment, but I get the sense from talking to sources that the Huskers are OK with letting this play out longer. The team isn’t rushing to get him on campus for an official visit because of a couple other situations.

>> Remember that numbers are tight for Nebraska. It’s going to be tough to take Lewis and Alabama transfer defensive tackle Stephon Wynn. I’m told the team would be open to taking both but that it’s not 100% just yet. The team feels like they are in a good position with Wynn but are still battling Georgia Tech. A decision is expected soon for Wynn between the two programs.

There also is a spot for Texas transfer wide receiver Marcus Washington. The St. Louis native took an official to Purdue last week but the door is wide open for Nebraska to land him. I would view him as a potential Zavier Betts replacement. He could also help the Huskers get back on the board in St. Louis.

>> Nebraska made the top eight schools for 2023 Colorado offensive lineman Ethan Thomason. The lineman (6-8, 315) has a list of Vanderbilt, Utah, Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa State, BYU, Oklahoma State and Stanford. He’s been on campus once before for a March Junior Day. Thomason is starting to set up official visits and will be at BYU June 3. He told Hail Varsity that he may take his official to Nebraska during the season. He intends to take a two-year church mission immediately after high school and is on track to graduate this December.

>> As Hail Varsity reported the Huskers are getting the first official visit from Scottsbluff offensive lineman Brock Knutson. One thing that caught my attention is how strongly he felt about Nebraska being his dream school. He did hope for an offer from the team earlier than the spring game which allowed Iowa State to make good progress with him. The Cyclones will get a visit from him, but I predict that he will end up as a Husker before the summer is over.

>> This week the Huskers made an intriguing offer to a rising player out of Indiana. Class of 2023 athlete Jackson Carver announced an offer from the Huskers on Thursday. What makes it unique is that Nebraska is the only school to offer him as a defensive end.

“I was very excited to receive the offer, especially as my first strictly DE offer,” Carver said.

Carver has mostly played hockey and lacrosse growing up so he is still learning the game of football. He’s not exactly an off the radar prospect though with 31 scholarships to play football. Carver hasn’t talked to Nebraska yet about taking an official visit but told me that he would strongly consider it. He will visit Miami for an official visit on June 10.
