The Recon:

>> As I wrote in the recruiting notebook yesterday, this next stretch of time is very important for the class of 2020. Three of the next four games are at home starting with Northern Illinois this weekend.

Nebraska is doing it big for the first night game of the season. There are six official visitors including one 4-star defensive back committed to Oregon, Myles Slusher. A handful of current commits will be back for unofficial visits and there are several priority targets for 2021 as well.

>> Let’s talk Slusher, the current Oregon commit. He told Oregon reporters a few days ago that he is solid in his commitment to Oregon and wasn’t taking any visits. Things change quickly when you want to keep a visit under wraps. Slusher has been recruited hard by running backs coach Ryan Held since Held leads recruiting for Oklahoma. Nebraska can make things very interesting with a strong visit weekend.

>> There is a good group 2021 prospects coming to town this weekend. Since Nebraska has its quarterback for 2020, the Huskers are actively working through the 2021 options. One will be back on campus this weekend. California signal-caller Peter Costelli will here with his parents. Costelli told Hail Varsity that he is very excited to see a game day in Lincoln after being in town this summer for the Big Red BBQ.

>> Nebraska is hosting a trio of junior college prospects this weekend. Offensive lineman Kobe Rios is at Iowa Western Community College. The Illinois native stands at 6-foot-6 and 300 pounds. He originally was scheduled to go to Northern Iowa last cycle but went to IWCC to open his options. He’s excited to get to Lincoln.

“I would say I’m most excited for the atmosphere,” Rios said. “It’s my first time being in Lincoln and I heard the atmosphere is unbelievable.”

Joining him on the trip is teammate Darius Moore. Moore is a 6-foot-1 defensive back, who is looking to see some big hits for the Blackshirts this weekend. He also wants to see if Memorial Stadium lives up to what he’s been told.

“I would say I’m most excited to see the culture,” Moore said. “I hear stories all the time about Nebraska being known for their great fan base and love for the game. That’s what I’m most looking forward too.”

The third JUCO prospect coming to Lincoln this weekend is Butler Community College wide receiver/tight end DeShawn Hanika. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound pass catcher was a full qualifier out of high school so he can leave Butler in December. None of these players have offers from Nebraska yet but are targets to keep an eye on.

>> Nebraska is still in the market for one or even two more wide receivers in this class. One name to watch is Texas wide receiver Thad Johnson. The speedy Texan visited over summer and had a great trip where he connected with the Huskers staff. He has an official visit in the works over the next month. Nebraska is in good shape with him but he’s been on the radar of fans much.

>> The kicker situation at Nebraska is strange right now. There won’t be too many times that a program has its top two kickers out with injury. As both issues continue to linger, don’t be surprised if Nebraska starts poking around kicker prospects for 2020. I would not count on the Huskers using a scholarship on a kicker but doing their diligence on new players to bring in this cycle would be smart.
