Big Red Recon: Time to Seize Momentum for Huskers

November 22, 2019

We are deep into November as the Huskers are now fighting for their bowl lives. Saturday’s game against Maryland is a must-win that would set up a pretty fun showdown with Iowa to get bowl eligible. There is plenty at stake for the team on the field. Recruiting right now is also at an interesting place.

The Huskers hosted a big visit weekend against Wisconsin and will likely have another good one for the game against Iowa. Things seem slow but there are good things happening behind the scenes.

Let’s get to the Recon.

The Recon:

>> There is confidence coming out of last weekend with the official visitors in town. The talk is Nebraska feels good about a number of guys that were in town. The behind-the-scenes momentum now needs to carry over to public commitments. The Huskers can make a late surge down the stretch but it needs to get rolling soon.

Coming out of the weekend, here are the official visitors I feel good about winding up as Huskers:

  • 4-star WR Marcus Fleming
  • 4-star DB Jaiden Francois
  • 4-star DB Darion Green-Warren
  • 3-star JUCO LB Jamoi Hodge

Hodge is still taking his official visit to Arizona this weekend but expect a decision soon after that trip.

“To be honest, they [Nebraska] are on top right now,” Hodge told Hail Varsity after visiting Lincoln. “I’m just going to probably go ahead and check out Arizona to see what they have to offer. I’m going to be making my decision soon on where I’m going to go. I don’t have a time frame yet but it’ll be soon.”

>> Last weekend the Huskers picked up a commitment from 2020 Iowa offensive lineman Henry Lutovsky. I’m a big fan of his potential at the next level. I think he will make a terrific guard down the road for offensive line coach Greg Austin. In talking to Lutovsky’s trainer this week, Lutovsky has already changed his body quite a bit over the last year. He’s dropping bad weight and adding muscle. Being 6-foot-6, 325-pounds at 16 is massive. He's benching over 300 pounds and squatting over 600 pounds currently.

>> One pass rushing name to keep an eye on until the early signing date is Florida defensive end/outside linebacker Josh Griffis. The Huskers like him as a stand up outside linebacker. Louisville likes him as a rush end and he will be visiting there this weekend for the second time. Florida State, where he is still currently committed, has pitched both to him. When I asked Griffis about the strength of his game, his answer couldn’t be better for Husker fans.

"Pass rushing is my biggest thing," he said. "I think I am really good with my hands and I'm powerful. I put a lot of linemen on their backs with power moves. I get a lot of strip sacks that way and I close the pocket good. I'm also good at reading plays and getting off blocks.”

Griffis is scheduled to take an official visit to Lincoln for the matchup with Iowa. It will be a huge visit and opportunity for Nebraska to land the talented edge rusher.

>> One player already on the team that I think has a bright future is true freshman defensive lineman Ty Robinson. He saw his first action last weekend against Wisconsin. Not only did he hold his own, but defensive line coach Tony Tuioti said that he played the best of those young guys. Don’t be in a rush to lock Robinson into one position.

“I think Ty has position flex,” Tuioti said. “He has a really bright future. He can play nose for us. He can play end. He can play a three-technique. I can put him in front of a center. He’s got size. He’s got speed. He’s got athleticism. It’s good to know we’ll have him around for awhile.”

The Arizona native becoming the type of player he was projected to be coming out of high school would be a great development for this defense moving forward. He’s showing flashes already and a full offseason of training could help him turn it loose next season.
