James Monds III is a name that most Husker fans know by now if you follow recruiting. His uncle, Wonder Monds, played for the Huskers in the 1970s making the Florida defensive back a a legacy player. The Nebraska coaching staff has been recruiting Monds hard for a couple years now, and he has become one of the better cornerback prospects in Florida for the 2022 class.
This last year Monds helped his Fort Pierce Westwood high school team to a 7-3 record. He played a key role in his team’s record, picking off five passes and returning three kickoffs for touchdowns. Between his sophomore and junior seasons Monds believes he improved his backpedal and coverage skills by watching more film.
Since his uncle played for the Huskers, Monds came into the recruiting process aware of Nebraska. He’s learned a lot more since being recruited heavily by the program.
“I knew a little bit about them with my uncle playing there,” Monds said. “I didn’t really know a whole bunch about what they have and the things that they do for their team that I know now. When Coach Chinander sends me pictures of the whole team having barbecues or going out bowling and just things like that having fun. I really like that about them.”
Defensive coordinator Erik Chinander and defensive backs coach Travis Fisher are the two main coaches in contact with the defender. He says that his relationship with both is great, describing them as “two peas in a pod.” Those relationships are why the Huskers are getting the first official visit from Monds in early June.

Indiana, Mississippi State, Michigan State and Miami are the other schools recruiting him the hardest right now. He locked in an official visit date to Indiana on the weekend of June 11. Monds is looking for a school where he can go in and compete for playing time right away.
He’d like to pick a school before his senior season after taking at least 4 official visits.
