Dru Mathis Hits It off With Scott Frost, Has No Complaints From Visit

November 18, 2018

This weekend, Nebraska hosted seven official visitors. Four of the seven were uncommitted prospects, including junior college pass rusher Dru Mathis‍ from Moorpark Community College in Moorpark, California. Mathis’ dad and brother joined him on the trip to Lincoln. The Huskers like Mathis at outside linebacker because of his pass rush ability that he showed this season. He averaged two sacks a game.

When I caught up with Mathis, he had just had his flight delayed by a few hours.

Here is my full Q&A with Mathis.

What were your overall impressions?

“It was good, I liked it a lot. Coach [Scott] Frost, the coaching staff and everyone was great. There isn’t one thing I could complain about.”

Did the visit matchup with what you were expecting coming in?

“I’d say interacting with the coaches and seeing how they were. Seeing how they are all players coaches I like that. I like that about Coach Frost. He doesn’t act like the typical head coach and superior over everyone. You’d never think he was the head coach. He’s humble, cool and talkative.”

Did you get to watch film to see how youd be used?

“Oh yeah, I watched film with Coach Dewitt. He was showing me some Shaqueem Griffin cut ups from UCF. It was cool, rushing off the edge and being able to go back into coverage doing a bunch of good things.”

Were you able to picture yourself being in that role while watching the game?

“Oh yeah, no doubt. It’s what I do right now with my JUCO. I’d be able to do that most definitely.”

What would you say were highlights of the visit?

“Man, the atmosphere for sure. I’m at the airport right now and people know who I am and are coming up to me knowing who I am, telling me I should be a Cornhusker. It’s crazy. The fan base really stands out.”

What do you think your timeline for a decision will be?

“In December I’ll make my decision. [I have a trip to] TCU and then after TCU, I’ll take a trip to Baylor. I’ll make an announcement a couple days before the early signing period. I don’t see myself making my decision soon because I do sign in a month. I’ll ride it out to the end.”

Did you feel like the staff made you feel wanted?

“Oh yeah, Coach Frost told me that in our meeting before I left that I’m a top priority. I could come make an impact right away.”
