Greg’s Guys: Linebackers Make a Move

August 19, 2019

We are back for another monthly installment of the Greg’s Guys list. The start of the season is just around the corner so official visits are being locked in for top targets on the board. The summer saw a lot of movement on the board as players committed and new targets emerged.

If you aren’t familiar the Greg’s Guys list, it’s my top 10 players in the class based on Nebraska’s needs, how a player fits in the scheme and talent. The player also needs to be interested in the Huskers.

The list is always fluid and that’s what makes it fun.

1. JUCO WR Omar Manning‍ (Kilgore, Texas)

The No. 1 spot on the list remains unchanged from last month. Things have gone quiet on Manning’s recruitment. That is not exactly a bad thing following his official visit to Nebraska over the summer. Manning has the size (6-3, 200) and speed combination that could make him a star in Nebraska’s offense. Can the Huskers get a pledge from him before he takes other official visits?

2. LB Kaden Johnson‍ (Minneapolis, Minnesota)

There was big news with the Minnesota linebacker on Sunday night. Johnson informed Hail Varsity that he is scheduled to take his official visit to Nebraska for the Ohio State game. When asked what he is most looking forward to on the visit, he responded “Probably seeing the game and spending time with all the coaches.” Johnson is an elite outside linebacker prospect. The battle with Minnesota and Wisconsin is ongoing for his signature.

3. LB Jackson Bratton‍ (Muscle Shoals, Alabama)

It is not often that I include committed players on the list. It certainly has been rare that a player committed elsewhere is this highly ranked as well. Bratton is worthy of the slot. The Alabama commit grew up a fan of Alabama but has been open to taking other visits. The Huskers will get their chance to host him for the Ohio State game. His teammate, Huskers quarterback commit Logan Smothers‍ is attending that game as well. Bratton’s instincts and toughness separate him from most high school linebackers.

4. CB Darion Green-Warren‍ (Santa Ana, California)

Last recruiting cycle there was a 4-star defensive back out West that Travis Fisher was quietly building a relationship with. He then came on an official visit and was blown away, later joining the class. That was Noa Pola-Gates. This cycle it could be Green-Warren. The Narbonne High star had a great summer on the camp circuit impressing at The Opening Finals. Look for him to take an official early in the season, perhaps for the Ohio State game.

5. LB Choe Bryant-Strother‍ (Norcross, Georgia)

The Atlanta-area linebacker has emerged as an important prospect in this class. His ability to be what Nebraska’s staff has called a “four-tool player” gives an extra bonus of versatility. Bryant-Strother took an official visit to Lincoln over the summer. Last month, Hail Varsity caught up with him to see how he liked the visit.

“Well, I knew the history of Nebraska and how great it is as a football school”, he explained. “I know Coach Frost’s history too. I knew the visit would be amazing but honestly, they blew it out of the water for me. It was way more than I expected.”

If his schedule allows, Bryant-Strother would like to come back to Lincoln this fall for a game. He’s definitely a prospect to keep an eye on through the season.

6. RB Sevion Morrison‍ (Tulsa, Oklahoma)

A decision is looming for the Oklahoma running back. Morrison is set to announce his college decision on Aug. 21 at his high school Edison Prep. The Huskers, Arkansas and Missouri are the schools in the race for now. The big question is—can the school he picks hang onto him? Wisconsin offered recently which could shake things up. There is no denying Morrison’s production. He racked up 2,761 rushing yards and 38 total touchdowns during his junior season.

7. LB Devyn Curtis‍ (Brentwood, Tennessee)

The Tennessee defender has been an under-the-radar priority target for the Huskers. The high 3-star (HV Rating: 86.8) took an unofficial visit to Lincoln for the Big Red BBQ this summer. Curtis is another potential Ohio State game official visitor. Nebraska is battling South Carolina and Vanderbilt among others for the linebacker who tallied 120 total tackles last season.

8. DE Nusi Malani‍ (San Bruno, California)

Malani is a prospect who is making his debut on the list this month. Standing at 6-foot-6, 250-pounds, his frame really stands out. He has long arms and moves well for his size. Nebraska defensive line coach Tony Tuioti has been working on Malani for some time now. Malani has an official visit set for the Northern Illinois game. He told Hail Varsity what he is most looking forward to on the trip.

“They told me about the fan energy and how the stadium is packed. They say the fans there go crazy. I want to see that for myself and meet all the staff. I want to see what the environment is like and seeing what it’s like out there.”

9. RB Marvin Scott III‍ (Port Orange, Florida)

Scott III took his official visit to check out Nebraska back in June. After the visit, he was pretty quiet so he slipped under the radar. He has good versatility with good hands plus speed and power. As a junior, he ran for 1,220 yards and 17 touchdowns in eight games. We recently caught up with the runner who gave his decision timeline and said what stood out to him about that official visit.

“It was amazing,” Scott III said. “The stadium and the campus is above and beyond. The facilities stood out the most from the weight room to the locker room.”

10. DT Marquis Black‍ (McDonough, Georgia)

Going into the 2019 season defensive line is a strength of the Nebraska football team. The staff would like to keep that momentum rolling with a quality defensive line haul this cycle. Georgia defender Marquis Black stands at 6-foot-4, 280-pounds. He has the ability to play all three defensive line positions. He already has an official visit on the books for the Ohio State game this fall.
