Husker RB Signee Ronald Thompkins Admitted, Set To Arrive Next Week

June 20, 2019

The Huskers received some good news on Thursday when it became official that touted Georgia running back Ronald Thompkins‍ had officially been admitted into Nebraska, multiple sources confirmed to Hail Varsity.

Thompkins is set to join the team next week.

The Grayson High School star is now fully qualified after getting the ACT score needed. Thompkins has moved under the radar in recent months, in part because of slight academic concerns and in part because of his knee injury that cost him his senior season. Here’s what one of his former coaches Kenyatta Watson told Hail Varsity about him last June when he committed.

“Here’s the thing. He is our best football player," Watson said. "I know that’s saying a lot. We have guys that are ranked higher than he is but all of these kids have played together since they were 9-years-old. Ronald has always been the best football player. The analogy I use all the time is if you are picking a team in the neighborhood he is always the kid picked first. He can do so many great things. He can play quarterback, running back, receiver, corner, safety. Whatever you need him to do, he can do it. He is so versatile and works so hard. He’s very humble and doesn’t take himself too seriously. He treats everyone the same. It doesn’t matter if you are an incoming freshman or senior, he treats everyone the same.”

Nebraska stuck with Thompkins after the ACL injury that cost him his senior season in the season-opener against current Husker Rahmir Johnson’s team. On Signing Day, Scott Frost spoke about just how good Thompkins can be.

“If you watch his highlights from this year before he got hurt, I think he’s got the chance to be special," Frost said. "I think he’s doing well in his rehab process and we’ll see how healthy he is when he gets here, but I know I expect great things from Ronald.”

Next, we’ll see how ready Thompkins is to contribute this season, or if Nebraska will want to keep up his rehab, redshirt him and have him full go for the 2020 season. There will be time for that debate later, but for now, enjoy the good news the team just got.
