Huskers have Team’s Back, JUCO DB Darius Moore Takes Note

September 15, 2019

Since Coach Scott Frost and his staff took over, the Huskers have regularly recruited the junior college ranks to add instant talent to the team. Running backs coach Ryan Held serves as the JUCO recruiting coordinator with deep connections around the country.

The Huskers hosted a handful of JUCO prospects for unofficial visits over the weekend, including Iowa Western defensive back Darius Moore‍. The Iowa native made the trip with his dad and friend. Moore has three years to play two at the Division I level.

I caught up with him to get his overall thoughts on the visit, what he was focused on during the trip and more.

Here is the full Q&A:

What were your overall thoughts on the visit?

“I thought it was a great experience to see first-hand what it’s like to be on the field knowing the whole state has your back. My friend and I had numerous people come up to us boasting and telling us how great UNL is and the incredible history of the team, etc. I had a lot of fun watching the game too. I was mainly just watching the safeties and corners all game instead of focusing on the actual play to try to learn a thing or two. The defense held their own and it doesn’t get more exciting than that.”

Which coaches did you get to talk with and how are those relationships going?

“My dad actually got off work late so we were running a little behind and when we got there, Maddie—who works for the team—told us they [the coaches] already had [gone] down to the field at dinner.”

Which coaches were you able to talk with while here?

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to talk to [defensive backs] Coach Fisher or [defensive coordinator] Erik Chinander because we didn’t get the opportunity to see them but I am very interested in coming back for another visit to get to talk to them.”

What would you say are some things you are most looking for in a future school?

“I would say a welcoming team. I think that that brother relationship means a lot. Also, a program that that helps the athletes with academics. Plus knowing that the fans have our back and most importantly that competitive drive from the defensive side.”

Have the coaches talked to you about the process to get an offer?

“As far as offers go we haven’t got to that talk yet but I hope too soon.”

What were the most memorable things about the visit?

“When we were on the field and watching the intros from the defensive backs on the big screen. I was just imagining myself up there and it just me the chills. It was a great and memorable time.”
