Huskers Hosting Former a 5-star Defensive Back Transfer

June 03, 2021

The month of June is going to be a wild one in recruiting.

Now that the dead period has been lifted, normal recruiting activities can begin again. Teams are hosting camps, going to satellite camps and are preparing to host visitors. Because the transfer portal has exploded in college football, it means that we will see players from the portal pop on campuses this month too.

Hail Varsity has learned that former 5-star defensive back from the 2018 recruiting class Tyreke Johnson is being hosted by Nebraska on Thursday. During his recruiting cycle, Johnson was the 21st best player in the nation per 247Sports. Johnson (6-1, 190) entered the portal last month after announcing his intentions to leave Ohio State.

Johnson played just 136 defensive snaps and recorded only eight tackles in three seasons with the Buckeyes from 2018-20.

It makes sense that the Huskers would be linked with Johnson for a couple reasons. First, he plays a position of need at cornerback. The Huskers appear locked in on landing a cornerback from the portal this offseason. Cam Taylor-Britt has one corner spot locked down. Opposite him there is less experience with Quinton Newsome, Braxton Clark and others battling it out.

Johnson is also from a familiar area for the Husker staff specifically defensive backs coach Travis Fisher. He played his high school football at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida. The Huskers have two scholarships left to use this summer from the 2021 recruiting class to bring in new players.
