The Huskers have pulled off a signing day surprise.
That’s what happened when 4-star wide receiver Janiran Bonner flipped his commitment to the Huskers. He announced his decision live on ESPN on Wednesday.
Bonner (6-2, 195) had been committed to Georgia Tech since April. He did not sign with the school in December which was a bad sign for the program. Many college coaches have feel that if prospects don’t sign in December then all bets are off when it comes to landing them. The Yellowjackets moved on in January and picked up a commitment from a different wide receiver recently. The Huskers won out for his signature over Memphis and Jackson State.
The Georgia native pulled off something rare in today’s recruiting world. He took a last-minute secret official visit to Lincoln the weekend of Jan. 28. That was the final weekend that visits were allowed before the dead period began. That visit boosted the Huskers chances of landing the playmaker. Bonner tallied 50 catches for 816 yards and nine touchdowns during his senior season.
His recruitment was led by tight ends coach Sean Beckton who is the Huskers’ point person in Georgia. Wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph was also heavily involved in landing him. Now that Bonner is in the class, he is the third wideout to join the Huskers’ 2022 class from high school. He joins Florida native Victor Jones Jr. and Louisiana native Decoldest Crawford. Nebraska also added a pair of transfer wide receivers to the mix this offseason. LSU transfer Trey Palmer followed Joseph his previous stop. He and New Mexico State wideout Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda joined the team in January.
