The Huskers have added their first defensive back commitment to the 2022 recruiting class.
Hail Varsity confirmed that Illinois defensive back Jalil Martin has committed to Nebraska. Martin committed to the program during his official visit for the weekend of the Ohio State game.
Having camps this offseason impacted a lot of players in a positive way. Martin was one of the better stories of camp season this year. His recruiting profile rose significantly during the summer. He hit several camps to get noticed including Nebraska’s Friday Night Lights camp. Martin was one of four Chicago-area players to made his mark on the Husker coaching staff that day.
Martin has stayed busy this season taking visits to evaluate his options. His offer list swelled to 15 before he narrowed his choices down to a final four. The last four were Nebraska, Illinois, Ole Miss and Colorado.
Martin (6-3, 190) was one of the top uncommitted players left in Illinois. He held 15 scholarship offers so it’s tough to call him a sleeper. But he was certainly an under the radar recruit coming into the 2021 season.
The Huskers commit list is now at nine following the commitment of Martin. He’s the team’s first commitment since June. Martin is also another Chicago-area prospect joining the Huskers. Wide receiver Alante Brown and defensive back Marques Buford are already on the team. The Huskers are hoping to start a pipeline into that area. It produces Power Five players on a yearly basis.
This commitment is also the momentum that Nebraska needs. We are heading into the stretch run before the early signing period.
