Huskers Newly Offered JUCO Pass Rusher Talks Visit and More

November 06, 2019

The Huskers are continuing to widen the net as they try to catch talent for the 2020 recruiting class.

Tyler Junior College defensive lineman DeVere Levelston (6-5, 250) announced on Twitter that he picked up an offer from Nebraska.

Levelston, who is being recruited by Nebraska as a hyrbrid outside linebacker, was extended the offer by outside linebackers coach Jovan Dewitt.

“It was a great conversation between me and Coach Dewitt,” Levelston said. “It was a blessing. It was a blessing to get the offer. It made me feel like the sky is the limit. I just had a happy feeling when he offered me.”

The Huskers had been in contact with Levelston’s coaches since October about their interest in him. Now that he holds an offer, a potential visit date is becoming clear. Levelston won’t be able to make it out for a game but believes he will be in Lincoln the weekend of Dec. 6. That’s one of two visit weekends in December ahead of the early signing period.

Originally from Texas, the defender feels he can definitely play outside linebacker in college. He did it during his senior year of high school so he would be comfortable doing that again. Tyler’s season didn’t turn out as expected but there were still positives to take from it.

“As a team we didn’t really have a great season,” he explained. “We went 4-5 so we didn’t make the playoffs. As a team, I was disappointed in that. Individually, my season went pretty well. I had six sacks. I think I had over 50 tackles.”

The hybrid pass-rusher didn’t know much about the Huskers before they started recruiting him. He did know that they are the only major football team in the state and have had success in the past. He will be coming out of JUCO in December and is a rare 4 for 3 player, Meaning he has four years to play three seasons.

He has some set criteria for what he is looking for in a school.

“I’m looking for being comfortable within the program, the family type vibe too,” he said. “The character of the players and coaches. Also, what type of defense the team runs. It’s a lot of things I am looking for in my recruitment.”
