Iowa DT Griffin Liddle: ‘Nebraska Is Really Different’

September 16, 2019

One thing I’ve noted a few times is how well Nebraska does at getting future key targets on campus early for a game day experience. This weekend was no exception as many 2021 targets were in Lincoln to see the Huskers’ big win under the lights over Northern Illinois, 44-8.

Nebraska is also making a habit of going into Iowa to recruit players from the rival state. One of those prospects on hand this weekend was Bettendorf, Iowa, defensive tackle Griffin Liddle‍. The stout lineman (6-3, 255) was in Lincoln for his first game day experience but he had been in Lincoln before for a Junior Day.

I caught up with Liddle to get his thoughts on his relationship with Coach Chinander, the Huskers recruiting Iowa heavily and much more.

Here is the full Q&A:

What were your overall thoughts on the visit?

“I think it was really fun. It was a great experience. I’ve never really experienced something like that. Nebraska is really different. The fans are awesome. It was just crazy.”

Was that the first time here for a game?

“Yeah, I’ve just visited before but not for a game.”

What did you get to do while here?

“We got to eat first. Then we went to the locker room before the game. We came out on the field for warm ups and stuff. We watched the game, then after the game we got to go into the locker room.”

What was it like being in the locker room after a big win?

“They were all pumped. It was really exciting. They were all just having fun. It was just a good team atmosphere. They were all just celebrating with each other, it wasn’t individuals. It was really fun to watch.”

Did you get to talk to any of the coaches while here?

“Some of them. Mostly the recruiting guys. The main coaches were obviously coaching.”

Which coaches are you most in contact with?

“[Defensive coordinator] Coach Chinander and [Director of Player Personnel Sean] Dillon.”

What do you think about coach Chinander getting Nebraska into Iowa more?

“I think that’s awesome. I think Iowa guys are great. Especially because it’s next door. They are good guys to recruit. All the Iowa guys are good to recruit. They just get after it. So do the Nebraska guys. So do all the Midwest guys really. It’s just a different type of football in the Midwest.”

How would you describe your relationship with Coach Chinander?

“We are pretty close. We text every once in a while to see what’s up. We are getting to know each other and it’s part of the process.”

What other schools are you looking at right now?

“I’d say Michigan State, Iowa State, Iowa, Minnesota are the big ones. Just those so far.”

What are some of the things you are most looking for in a school?

“I’m looking for good academics. Then good stability in the program. By that I mean coaches not leaving all the time. Coaches staying at the school, I really like that. You get to develop relationships with them. A good team atmosphere where everyone gets along to work really well together. When a team works well together they end up doing good. I like that.”

Who came with you on the trip and what did they think?

“My mom and dad came with me on the trip. They were really impressed. We’ve never really seen that many people in red in one place. We’ve never been in a stadium that big. 90,000, that’s crazy. It was really exciting. It was insane. I was an awesome experience.”

What were some of the most memorable things about the trip?

“Just in the locker room how the players interacted with each other. How hyped up they were before the game. Also, how they interacted on the sidelines and made the crowd get into it. Also, how the fans were, they were crazy. They just love everything Nebraska football and wanted them to win. The players were relentless. That was awesome.”
