Joseph Lewis Leads Way for Huskers’ Recruiting Weekend

September 29, 2016

Another Nebraska Huskers home game, another huge official visit weekend on tap. Nebraska will host Illinois Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in its second Big Ten game of the season and several top targets will be in town to take in the homecoming atmosphere.

Commits in Town

>> Brenden Jaimes

 >> Broc Bando

>> Jaevon McQuitty

>> Keyshawn Johnson Jr.

Nebraska will once again have a bevy of peer recruiters working the sideline Saturday, as four commits will be at Memorial Stadium for the game. Brenden Jaimes, an offensive tackle from Texas, will be making his first trip back to Lincoln since committing back in May. Jaimes will be joined by fellow lineman commit Broc Bando, who will be returning to his hometown to take in his first Husker game of the season.

Rounding out the committed visitors is a pair of familiar faces. Jaevon McQuitty, Nebraska’s second longest tenured commit, will be taking his first and only official visit of the season to watch the Huskers take on the Illini. Keyshawn Johnson Jr. has already taken his official visit to Nebraska, but he will be back for an unofficial visit again this weekend. Expect all four, especially Johnson and McQuitty, to be working hard to reel in at least one of the uncommitted visitors over the weekend.

Uncommitted Visitors

Joseph Lewis

WR | Los Angeles, Calif.

No. 3 WR (Rivals) | No. 1 WR (Scout) | No. 9 WR (247Sports)

Let’s start with the headliner, shall we? Ever since Nebraska miraculously got Joseph Lewis to participate in its Friday Night Lights camp this June, he has emerged as Nebraska’s top wide receiver target. Lewis currently holds over 30 offers, with Nebraska battling it out with Oklahoma, Arizona, Oregon and several others for his commitment. Many felt that USC had the inside track on Lewis’ recruitment, but the Trojans’ struggles dropped the team out of the race for the talented wide receiver. This will be Lewis’ third trip to Lincoln, and while I don’t expect him to commit over the weekend, he is a very likely candidate to be the gem of Nebraska’s 2017 class.

Chance of Committing Over the Weekend: 5%

Jaylon Johnson

CB | Fresno, Calif.

No. 6 CB (Rivals) | No. 5 CB (Scout) | No. 8 CB (247Sports)

Jaylon Johnson has been a bit of an under the radar visitor for Nebraska, if you count a consensus top 100 recruit as under the radar. One possible reason for this under the radar status is the fact that Johnson didn’t even have Nebraska in his top seven in mid-July, but the Huskers have surged into the picture for him lately. Johnson currently has three official visits scheduled. Those three visits are Nebraska, Utah and Oklahoma. The Sooners appear to have the inside track at this point, as Johnson has already visited Norman once this cycle.

Chance of Committing Over the Weekend: 5%

Chevin Calloway

CB | Dallas, Tex.

No. 8 CB (Rivals) | No. 14 CB (Scout) | No. 27 CB (247Sports)

Johnson won’t be the only top cornerback prospect in Lincoln this weekend, as 4-star cornerback prospect and current Iowa commit Chevin Calloway will also be in town. Calloway, who is from the same high school as current Nebraska running back Devine Ozigbo, committed to Iowa in early July but appears to be reconsidering his decision. Calloway’s interest level in Nebraska appeared to skyrocket a couple weeks ago, which was also about the same time that his teammate, Husker defensive tackle target Damion Daniels, came back from his official visit to Nebraska. I wouldn’t expect a flip over the weekend, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Calloway is no longer a Hawkeye commit by next Saturday.

Chance of Committing Over the Weekend: 5%

Isaiah Hodgins

WR | Walnut Creek, Calif.

No. 42 WR (Rivals) | No. 49 WR (Scout) | No. 65 WR (247Sports)

Nebraska appears to be in on just about every top 300 wide receiver prospect in the country, as the Huskers will be hosting an intriguing prospect in Isiaiah Hodgins. Hodgins currently has 41 catches for 667 yards and eight touchdowns and he’s just four games into his senior season. Hodgins currently holds 12 FBS offers, with Oregon appearing to be the main team to beat at this point.

Chance of Committing Over the Weekend: 5%

Rahyme Johnson

OLB | Los Angeles, Calif.

No. 21 OLB (Rivals) | No. 25 OLB (Scout) | No. 28 ATH (247Sports)

Nebraska will host one of its top targets at outside linebacker this weekend in Rahyme Johnson, as Trent Bray will look to fill his final linebacker opening with the talented athlete. Johnson appears to have Nebraska as his favorite since visiting Lincoln for the spring game, but Texas A&M and Florida have both made pushes for the talented Californian lately. I expect Johnson’s visit this weekend to eliminate any doubt and we will see Bray fill up the linebacker position with the versatile Johnson.

Chance of Committing Over the Weekend: 70%
