Mailbag: Picking a Hat

January 31, 2017

Tomorrow is the big day for recruiting fans everywhere: National Signing Day. That means this week’s mailbag is dedicated to the big recruiting day on Feb. 1, with the exception of a few random questions. From what hat you would choose on National Signing Day to what position in the 2017 class was the biggest letdown, we’re tackling all of your recruiting questions (and more!).

Brandon Vogel, Jacob Padilla, Jake Jensen and Erin Sorensen answer your questions in this week’s Hail Varsity mailbag.

Q: What Nebraska hat would you pick to announce your selection? And why is it the corn hat? – B.D.

BV: A simple, red one with a white football-N.

ES:
I liked this one Nebraska hat that the kids kept highlighting during
the U.S. Army All-American Bowl that said Nebraska across the front. It
was great, except no one agreed with me. For that reason, I would pick
that hat.

Q: Does Nebraska land Elijah Blades? – A.W., Neb.

JP: I know nothing but I’m in a good mood so I’ll say yes.

JJ: Looks good for NU but USC can never be counted out when it comes to Signing Day.

ES: I was a firm no last week, but I’ve changed my mind. Yes, Nebraska lands Blades.

Q: Who’s going to have the least legible signature on National Signing Day? – A.G.

JJ: John Parrella when he signs his receipt for the 20 monsters he drank.

ES:
I don’t know why I think it would be an offensive lineman, but that’s
how I’m leaning. I’ll take Brenden Jaimes or Chris Walker.

Q: Which position in the current 2017 recruiting class is the biggest letdown from either talent or numbers? – F., Denver, Neb.

JP:
Nebraska rebounded nicely at tight end after losing Reese Leitao by
picking up Kurt Rafdal (a future two-tight end set with the 6-foot-8
Austin Allen and the 6-foot-7 Rafdal sounds fun). The wide receiver,
linebacker, offensive line and quarterback hauls are all very good. I’m a
little biased but I like Jaylin Bradley a lot and together with Ben
Miles at fullback, I think they’re good even if they don’t get another
back.

So that basically leaves us with two position groups –
secondary and defensive line. If Nebraska gets Damion Daniels to go with
Deiontae Watts and Deontre Thomas, I think they’re good there.

Nebraska
currently has zero defensive backs committed. Nebraska is in on some
big-time targets (Deommodore Lenoir, Greg Johnson, Elijah Blades), but
if they strike out on them and only end up with Michael Onyemaobi (or
worse, miss out on him too) then I think cornerback is the answer here.

JJ:
If Nebraska holds onto to Guy Thomas, I’ll be happy. If he bolts for
Pitt, I’ll be pretty bummed that Nebraska whiffed on an edge rusher for
the second class in a row.

Q: What position would you offer Les Miles when he’s here with Ben at the spring game? Advisor? Consultant? Coach? – B.

BV: If he was willing to be a position coach and Nebraska was willing to put two coaches on the offensive line, well, that wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Q: Any leads on the next coach or two (pending NCAA approval) for NU Football? – 3.L.C.

JJ: All quiet. Chatter will pick up after Signing Day.

Q: Why is it that Nebraska football and basketball always seem so consistently inconsistent? – K.B., Omaha, Neb.

ES: If I had the answer, it’d be easy to solve, wouldn’t it? Right now, I think it has a lot to do with depth on both teams. Football is working to correct that and so is basketball. Will things be as inconsistent in two years? Guess it depends on how the talent pans out.

Q: What are your suggestions for a moderately priced fitness watch? – B.

ES: I used to have a FitBit and I liked it a lot. Only downside is that it can occasionally break early in its life, but the customer service with FitBit has always been outstanding in my opinion. They typically fix the issue pretty fast. That’s definitely a moderately priced option. I now have an Apple Watch (not the fancy one, just your basic) and that’s a bit more but I also like it.

Q: Is a hotdog a sandwich? – W.A., Lincoln, Neb.

JP: No. It’s a hot dog.

Q: What tasty food would be disgusting if eaten over rice? – W.A., Lincoln, Neb.

JP: This has to be one of the most bizarre questions we’ve received since I’ve been a part of this, so props for that. Any kind of fruit pie or related foods would be awfully strange with rice.

JJ: Angel food cake. That’s a bad combination of food texture.

BV: Rice pudding.

ES: I can’t even top what’s been mentioned above.
