Nebraska Makes Big Impression on 2021 Kansas RB Devin Neal

January 21, 2020

The Huskers had a good number of top targets on campus last weekend. There was only one official visitor for the 2020 recruiting class, but there were several 2021 targets on hand for a small version of a Junior Day. The prospects got to tour campus, meet with position coaches and have a sit down with Coach Scott Frost.

Lawrence High School standout running back Devin Neal‍ made the trip to Lincoln with his parents. The 3-star (HV Rating: 84.8) had a good time on campus and was able to learn a lot about what Nebraska has to offer. Neal spent most of the visit around running backs coach Ryan Held who he got to know well on his visit.

“My mom and dad came with me to Lincoln,” Neal said. “They were really as excited as I was. It seemed like a place that I could possibly call home. They were definitely intrigued by what they have to offer when it comes to weight room. Also, the way they take care of their players to prevent injuries.”

Neal enjoyed the presentation given by head strength and conditioning coach Zach Duval. It was explained to the family what the Huskers are preparing for their future weight room which was also impressive. It wasn’t just all strength and conditioning talk during the visit though.

“I spent a good 30- or 45-minutes watching film with Coach Held,” Neal said. “He was talking about different plays and what he likes in a running back style. He likes that I’m a bigger back but also a speed guy. I can also go out into the wide receiver role and run routes. Or I can come in on a motion and still do run plays. Being versatile and dynamic as a back is what he liked about my game.”

During his time with Frost, Neal had questions about his opportunity to play both football and baseball in college. He was pleased when Frost told him that he wants him to try his hand at both sports. Next up for Neal is a visit to the in-state Kansas Jayhawks. He already knows that he wants to return to Lincoln soon, hoping to check out a spring practice in March.

Neal is looking for a coach and coaches who would have a player first mindset. He also knows that he doesn’t want the recruiting process dragging out for very long.

“I definitely want to take my official visits earlier,” he said. “I don’t want to draw this out for too long. That’s not my style. I want to find a place I can call home sooner than later. That’s really what I’m about.”
