Nebraska Visitor Preview Versus Fordham for Home Opener

September 03, 2021

Nebraska last hosted visitors on Nov. 29, 2019 for the Iowa game, which means it’s been awhile since the Huskers could have prospects and their families attend a game at Memorial Stadium. The Fordham game isn’t the biggest matchup of the season but it is the home opener. Nebraska is set to host 44 total visitors this weekend.

There is only one official visitor coming to town this weekend. Wide receiver commit Victor Jones Jr. is making his way to Lincoln from Florida. This will be his first time in Nebraska. He didn’t get a chance to visit before committing to the team so he’s looking forward to meeting everyone on staff.

There will be other Husker commits in attendance this weekend. Jake Appleget, a 2022 linebacker commit, as well as 2022 linebacker Ernest Hausmann, 2023 tight end Benjamin Brahmer and 2023 offensive lineman Gunnar Gottula will be fixtures at home games this season.

Defensive athlete Vince Genatone is the most intriguing uncommitted 2022 prospect who will be in town. The Huskers likely see him as an inside linebacker target. Genatone racked up 17 tackles in his season-opening game last week. He’s due to have a big season and the Huskers will be watching him closely.

A lot of the 2022 prospects who are scheduled to visit are being looked at for potential walk-on spots. Some of the names to know there are offensive lineman Shan Acharya (6-5, 305), offensive lineman Dawson Fox (6-6, 300), defensive end Jack L’Heureux (6-5, 240), wide receiver Tyson Money (5-9, 155) and outside linebacker Chance Symons (6-3, 240). Defensive end Joshua Shaw (6-3, 270) is also a name to know.

The 2023 prospects that will be on campus are where things get even more interesting. The headliner of that group is Lincoln Southeast outside linebacker Teitum Tuioti. Wide receivers Malachi Coleman (6-5, 175) and Beni Ngoyi (6-4, 180) burst onto the scene during camp season this June. Both will be on the sidelines before the game. So will Lewis Central wide receiver Jonathan Humpal (5-10, 155). Humpal has impressed me each time I’ve seen him play or practice.

There are a trio of 2023 linemen that Nebraska wants to see more film from this season. Victor Isele (6-2, 221), Brock Knutson (6-7, 270) and Kade Pieper (6-3, 240) will be at the game. Tight end/defensive end Rocco Marcelino—who stands at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds as a 2023 prospect—will be as well.

There are just a couple of 2024 players coming to Lincoln but they are both big-time. Defensive back Mario Buford will be taking in his brother Marques’ first game as a Husker. Bellevue West quarterback Daniel Kaelin will also be at the game. Both 2024 targets hold Nebraska offers.
